When selling used expo gear...

What method do you use to determine prices?

Obviously for something that's still manufactured and is in ready supply there's typically enough examples on craigslists or forums to provide guidance. But what about those odd combinations of items...for example a M101A2 with a Mt. McKinley RTT and 3500# axle swap with Jeep Wrangler matching rims and tires? Try to price out the components and add them together? Any value to the work of swapping the axle and fabricating a rack for the tent?

I'm exploring some options...

I usually search classifieds to see what similar stuff sold for in the past.

Great question....my problem is that I buy stuff from people more than I sell... When I do; especially if it's new I sell it at a price far less than retail. I tend to buy the VAST majority of my gear used, so I try to get what I have invested it. Discontinued gear can go either way; depending on the demand, sometimes items command a retail or higher price. Say, for example, anything Snow Peak.

New or open box, I match Amazon.

Normal used stuff, I start at 50% off list and go down from there if it's in less than stellar condition.

Custom, rare, or out of production...what Dave said.

I like to price for fast sell and be fair. Too many people try to sell used stuff for more than new. I take pleasure in posting the Amazon link for the same item cheaper on the link. Many of the sellers got mad at me ruining their scam but
caveat emptor

This seems fairly standard for most things I've seen actually sold. For used items 50% is a number that moves things pretty quickly. If an item is new or unused, I'd go about 10% below what it can easily be found for. And I'be seen hard to find items (red Scepter can) go for 300%

I rarely have any items worth significant $$$ to get rid of. I'm hard on equipment, when I finally do get rid of something I usually just pass it along to someone that can use it.

Love it ;)

+1 - I'm hard on my gear. More so that if it's for sale, it's a SOLID piece of equipment and worth the price. The other stuff didn't make it, and shouldn't get passed on anyways.

I'm sure you know, trying to break even will never happen. I would take each item at used market value (including the custom work) and add them together with a slight markdown. You may get slightly more if you sell items separately but if you're pressed on time, price to sell.
