Water Filtration System help.

Angie (The Gingah Ninja) and I are heading out west to CO/UT/AZ in about a month. We are looking at water filtration systems and have zero experience with them. We will primarily be using this to fill two, one gallon Rotopax cans. The water will be used for cooking, cleaning, and if we run out of bottled water, drinking. There are two systems that are on our radar. Any help, suggestions. concerns or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have used a katadyn similar to that one but this was 10 years ago. Felt heavy took a while to prime but worked well once going. Had a cleanable ceramic element.

Recently if been looking for one myself. The msr Sweetwater has my eye. Have you looked at it? 99.9 effective

I have a couple filters. I have an MSR Waterworks, essentially an older version of the MiniWorks. It works well, but is a fair amount of work to produce a gallon of water.

I also have a kit that I bought from Pure Water Products that is a bit cheaper than the systems you are looking at.

I have the Steracyl Inline GAC Siphon unit. It is a good, simple solution with inexpensive replacement components. About the only thing you will need to replace is the carbon filter element.

I have only used it once to test, but it filters with siphon power fairly quickly. What surprised me was the fact that it would empty the source container to the bottom. I expected it to lose prime once the water level dropped below the top of the filter element. It drained the container nearly dry.

Download and print the use instructions.

I went on a backpacking trip over spring break and I had the lifestraw and my friend had the pump. We used the pump for the first two days but were so frustrated by how long and how much effort it took to pump. I think the lifestraw was probably a good choice cause you can go on and do other stuff while its filtering.

I've been a MSR Sweetwater guy for over a decade. No plans to change.
