On history channel. I don't watch much TV (never have the time), been under the weather the last 2 days and started watching this series. Very realistic so far, and highlights the eternal spirit of exploration, and rebellion against tyranny, that burns in all of us.

Anyone else watching the Vikings?

EDIT: Pretty graphic BTW, not for the kids!

Well duh...you know I have.

The series is based on the Saga of Ragnar which is the tale of one of the greatest of Norse kngs. The story is staying pretty true to the old tale, the fighting, weapons and armour are pretty authentic and its well written and paced. Even though I know how it turns out I look forward to each episode. I wonder if they'll do a follow up about Ragnar's three sons as they are as famous and bad assed as their old man.

I have another one on the back burner - Game of Thrones. I hear it's good too.

Season 2 coming in 2014...

Good Lord...errr...By Odin...I love this series. Not only for the story but for the depth of historical authenticity exhibited. I also like that the producers are staying true to the classical version of the ballad of Ragnar and not just inventing stuff. Really looking forward to riding the waves with Ragnar and his crew this spring.

Saw that action in line at the grocery store today, LOL... looks good though, and those Vikings were tough, despite the fierceness of the Celts, Picts, Anglo-Saxons, Normans, Irish, Danes, etc., etc. Ya know, decades ago I wrote a couple of poems about Vikings, since I have some Nordic blood coursing through my Anglo-Saxon veins, and here are those poems:

THE NORSEMEN

They sail their ships to distant shores,

And there they disembark in scores,

To venture forth in martial stride

And terrorize the countryside!

They send fierce landsmen to their graves,

And seize the fairest girls as slaves;

They ransack villages in turn,

And what remains, remains to burn!

They gather all that they can take,

And leave destruction in their wake.

Then they upon slain creatures dine,

And slake their thirst with stolen wine;

And after they consume their draft,

They stagger back to board their craft

And sail home to northern lands,

The spoils of combat in their hands.

BERSERKER

The murder rages in his eyes,

His mighty hands wield bloody sword;

The scourge of the retreating horde,

He pierces hearts with savage cries!

He cares not if he lives or dies,

This fearsome, frenzied martial lord;

The thrill of combat his reward,

His violence intensifies!

Beneath his feet thrash stricken foes,

Before him men withdraw in fright...

He crushes all with mortal blows!

He scorns his weak opponents' plight

And expedites their dying throes;

He revels in eternal fight!

Disclaimer: These poems were written in the days of my youth, when I felt like a resurrected Viking... I still feel like a Viking in many ways, especially where sailing and archery are concerned, but I'm not out to conquer the world, just carve my place in it, 10-4??? LOL.

Wishing I had television for once...and a battle axe!

I don't watch much TV, but this series hooked me with its quality. Historical accuracy, good actors and cultural authenticity, and follows the sagas well enough that it's believable.

Have y'all ever seen any of the archaeological remains dug up from battle sites in Europe? Skulls caved in. Arrowheads lodged in skulls, crushed rib cages, lower jaws hacked off. Life and especially battle was pretty gruesome back then..

Looking forward to season 3. There is still plenty of ground that the sagas covered that the show hasn't, particularly regarding Ragnar's sons.

Good show!
