Too many choices! Help me pick a 270 AWNING

I thought selecting an awning was going to be pretty easy, but the more reviews I watch and the more reading I do the more difficult the choice gets. Figured the best thing to do was see what everyone here is using.

I don't have much in the way of requirements other than, semi-freestanding, availability of walls, preferably $1000 or less for the awning, and I am trying to stay to 50lbs or less.

Top choices are

23Zero Peregrine 270 LST 51LBS $999

280gsm Ripstop poly-cotton canvas with a 2-year warranty. They also list this as having Light Suppression Technology, which is supposed to reduce the temperature under the awning by up to 20%, I have no idea if that is just marketing or if it actually works. The Peregrine has 2 attached legs and comes with 3 additional and there is enough room in the storage bag to fit the extra poles. Something noted in some of the video reviews is that the storage bag has an additional flap on the leading edge that velcros over the zipper to keep rain from being forced through while driving.

Overland Vehicle Systems Nomadic 270LT 53lbs $729.99

Covering 80Sq feet this is the smallest of the choices and also the least expensive. I have gotten to see these in person and the quality seems great and it has a 4-year warranty (double the warranty of 23zero). 600d Poly ripstop. They also have a larger version for $949 but it adds almost 20lbs

One feature I like on the OVS is the swivel on the top of the poles. which allow you to angle the legs outward to follow the slope of the walls.

Darche Eclipse 270 gen2 48lbs $1299

The Darche is 123.75 SQ FT and is built with 320gsm poly/cotton grid ripstop This has 6 legs, 3 attached and a similar swivel to the OVS awning. The Darche wall kit is extremely expensive at just over $1000 combined with the more expensive purchase price pushes the budget so with out some amazing reason, I think this one is out.

QuickPitch weathershade

I have heard good things about QuickPitch and the few reviews for the awning I have seen are favorable but their website isn't all that great. No weight is listed The quick pitch also only has 1 leg, most of the competitors have 3 attached legs. To me, having the extra legs would help in securing it in bad weather and remove some of the stress from the vehicle mount. I did find a weight listing on another site of 28kg which comes out to about 62 pounds making it one of the heaviest on this list.

The walls on the QuickPitch are vertical where the others angle out. I would think the angle would help with wind, and also gives you a little bit more space

As I typed this out I think I actually made up my mind, but I am still curious to hear some opinion before I open the wallet.

23zero... an offshoot of OzTent (looks similar doesn't it?). I like their stuff, no experience with that awning. But the "light suppression" thing sounds like marketing razzle dazzle. YMMV.

OVS. Another fairly new on the scene company (damn, I'm a dinosaur). That swivel on top of the poles will pop out in high desert winds where you operate sometimes. But that could be looked at as a fusible link so...

Darche is legit. Big in Oz. But I agree, very $$$ and adds up quick with walls.

QuickPitch. Big in Oz and South Africa. I have 2 of 3 of their main products on my truck. Not the shiniest or the most feature rich but I will tell you, their stuff is bomb proof in every way. And they have a distribution hub in Dallas (I've been there) so it's not hard to get. QuickPitch is very similar to AluCab so far as materials and construction.

As far as the walls, you have a point with wind BUT having had the Rhino Rack walls on my JL I'll tell you that "extra space" is really useless. Vertical walls enclose actual standing/usable room, and in tight confines (forest, rocky desert) the smaller footprint works to your advantage when looking for a suitable campsite.

Now, the one you're leaving out is what I run. Forceprotector Gear. Infinitely better awning material and REAL SHADE, no marketing razzle dazzle just SCIENCE tested in the Army's lab in Natick, MA and made here in USA. Infinite ways you can configure it and hands down the lightest of ALL the options. Yes, 5 extra minutes to set up, but when you do it's worth it. Shade, wind wall, privacy, inclement weather shelter, high winds, the only limits are your imagination.

And the best part of FPG over these $$$ hard mounted aluminum arm versions is this: if the wind WINS, and it will, the FPG lays down and then lives another day. The hard mount guys get mangled, usually broken for at least the trip or permanently. FPG is far more durable.

Happy hunting!

Heavy and pricey but I love my Alu-Cab. It helps I got it used at about 2/3 the cost, but even that was still expensive.

I second this! Used them in Namibia for two weeks straight every day, even when stopped for lunch. Free standing and stupid fast set up. So good that @Will Gillette bought one for his Taco. If you are attending the AAV DR you can see it first hand.

@knightrider has the Overland Pros deal on his AT Summit.
I was able to check it out last weekend in person and it's really nice.

Link to their product page.
They seem to have what you're looking for.
Thanks, I had not looked at that one. Specs say it is 77lbs which would make it the heaviest of the options so far. While I normally don't worry about weight with the truck, I want the weight up high to be minimal.

I currently have a Rhino Rack Bat-Wing. I would gladly replace it with a OVS one if I wanted to stay in budget. If I wanted to shoot the moon I'd get a Bundutec. The Bundutec is the only one I'd trust in the wind without legs. Won't buckle like an AluCab under rain/snow. A lot better build that any of the discount white-labled Alibaba ones. I may splurge and put a Bundutec 360 on the new trailer and keep the RhinoRack one for now.

I have an OVS (came on my Intech Flyer Explore) while I'm quite happy with it, I have nothing to compare it to. One dislike I have is water somehow gets into the bag when it's in it's closed/stowed position, requiring me to open the awning it my driveway often to dry it out. I should've removed it & stored it in the garage for the winter.

Interesting, that would be an annoying requirement for sure.

The Kinsmen Hardware 270* awnings are the darlings over on the GFC forums. USA made, brass and stainless hardware, free standing, prop arms, so on and so forth. Built in a small family shop. Pretty pricey though. I have no personal experience at all with these but thought I’d throw another option out there to muddy the water more.

I think this is part of what 23zero was trying to address with the flap over the leading edge of the zipper. Not sure that would make a difference when parked but I could see it helping while on the highway.

I have the Rhino Rack Batwing 270 Compact & have zero complains, but if I had it all over 2nd chance, my choice would be Bush Country USA 270 XT Awning.

I have a Darche Eclipse 270 (driver side) with sidewalls that I want to sell. Asking $800 including the sidewalls. I can bring it to DRV.

is it a gen 1 or a gen 2?

Just noticed this is a driver side, I think I need a passenger. Let me do some measurements

When did the gen 2 come out? I purchased mine Nov. 2019. Mine does have the aluminum hinge system and box tube arms. Weighs just short of 40lbs w/o the brackets.

If it's 40lbs it is a gen 2, the gen 1 was over 60. Next time I get home before dark I will measure it out and see if a driver side will work
