On this day in 1961. Alan B. Shepard was the first American to travel into space. We've come a long way...

We sure have. Last I heard NASA was... wait, NASA is still in business? :dunno

Sure hope nobody works for NASA and gets their chonies in a wad over the play on the NASA acronym!

Don't get me wrong, the people at NASA are some of the best and brightest. I have friends there.

My disappointment is that in terms of funding and support, NASA has only been able to do a fraction of what they are capable of.

...how disappointing...based on the thread title, I thought his would be about Star Trek!:(
It can be whatever you want it to be as long as it's about the universe that surrounds our tiny little planet. I used to like to poke fun at myself and say " Space,...the area between my ears" I started this thread for discussions about history, exploration and fun when thinking about everything out there. Look up! Adventures await!

I hope not either Bob. I am a big fan of NASA and wish we spent more on manned (personed) missions. I read somewhere that NASA's budget is a very tiny slice of the pie.

MMMMM, pie. Sorry, drifted off.

Technically, I believe the old X-15 pilots were the first into space. Eight of them broke the 50 mile mark. One got as high as 67.5 miles.

Pasted from Google:" With data from a new instrument developed by scientists at the University of Calgary, scientists confirmed that space begins 73 miles (118 kilometers) above Earth's surface. Apr 9, 2009"

Although I'm reading its actually the Karman line at 100km (62mi) above sea level.

Space-X is going to attempt to land their booster stage on a barge again tomorrow. Let's hope the third time is the charm!

Well, that sucked. Falcon experienced some massive technical issues after launch.

I was watching the live stream when it happened.
