Agreed. My garage is about to get a purge... So is the office.

While I generally avoid anything tagged tactical that essay runs concurrent with my way of thinking about gear and possessions these days. I've been paring back, selling unnecessary and redundant gear and when needed replacing old equipment with better quality and more pack-able replacements. We are in the midst of a gear redo as our equipment is getting long in the tooth and while we're at it we are being more conscious of storing it in a more efficient manner.
 
I have recently slain the clutter monster in my garage, but continue to see clutter monster spawn threaten to appear. Even on trips, the clutter monster threatens to appear at about day 3 or 4.

Constant vigil and careful planning are the only ways to keep clutter monsters at bay.
