People from California, what are my options to register a trailer w/o a title? ***Registered***

So what are my options on registering a trailer that only came with a bill of sale? It's a really old trailer, and the tags on it are from 2002 if that matters.

Take it to DMV inspection station, the CHP officer will come outside inspect and assign a title and reg. Simple

I have for over 30 years. What buckwilk said is pretty darn accurate. Call the DMV yourself instead of posting the question on an offroad forum and then criticize replies. While my trailer had current registration and plates from AZ for a 'home built', I had to take it to the DMV for inspection, including disclosure of purchase price for sales tax purposes, issuance of CA plates and tags. The bill of sale you have will be perfect for that unless you plan on lying about the purchase price to save on sales tax. If the tags are CA, even from 2002, that should make it 'easier' even in California! o_O

It was a joke  Jesus some of you guys are wound up really tight. I asked here because I called the DMV, and the girl I talked to told me there was no way to do it unless I had the pink, which I know can't be right because people do it all the time.

I'm getting ready to register mine. No bill of sale. Built with parts from different trailers. So basically it will be registered as a home built trailer.

I lived in California 20 years ago, and If I recall correctly, once at the DMV, you had to...

Naw, I got nothing to make this thread any funnier...

O P, I have the answer! You will never be able to register the trailer in California. In fact, it would be best if you got it out of state as soon as possible to avoid the obvious consequences. Head for the state line, I'm thinking Hawaii, and sign it over to the first sober person you see. I don't think you want to spend the rest of your days seeing this albatross in your rear view. Hope this helps....

Tired. Unfortunately (1st world problem) my wife has a great job with great medical benefits. We tried to move, but her pay was going to be cut in half and the cost of benefits would have tripled. But I am looking for property out of state.

Sarcasm never, ever comes across well typed. o_O

There's always a way. Expired tags, bill of sale should be plenty. I thought about AAA, but I think a simple inspection will be needed at DMV. Does the trailer still have it's mfg. tag/serial #. That'll also help with DMV.

No mfg. tag/or serial #'s I can find. I called DMV again and go a different answer. This is why I would rather ask people here, instead of calling the DMV. I'm sure if I call again, I will get a different answer and option. They said if there is no plate, I just have to take it down there and get it inspected. So something may get lost on the way to the DMV.

I'd think having the plate would be better - shows DMV that it had been registered. That and your bill of sale should be plenty.

PA hastled me about the title on a military surplus trailer. I have a Maine registration and plate. 5 year or lifetime option. Very easy

Trailers are easier than real vehicles. I have done a few. Just make an appointment and take it down there. They will issue it a VIN if it doesn't have one and a plate too. You have a bill of sale, that's a good start. You will need to fill out a statement of facts and as long as it is not stolen, you should lave with a temp title and the real one in the mail. Be prepared to pay a few fees in cash or check (no credit or debit).

You will never get the same answer from anyone at the DMV, in person, or over the phone. If it is something out of the norm, they will be lost and probably call over an old timer for help. Be polite and persistent and you will leave several hours later with what you need. Remember, the employees hate being there more than you do and appreciate it when you are nice to them.
