Music! The Classic "If you could only take one album with you..." question.

Here is the question: "If you could only take one album with you on your next overlanding trip, what would it be?"

I have always loved music from many different genres and one of the great pleasures of going "out there" for me is that it gives me a chance to listen to great music for long periods of time. I get to pick albums for the long highway ride to the dirt gateway. I get to pick albums that fit the terrain and scenery on the trail. Maybe an album for the good times around the campfire. And then maybe some relaxing stuff for the trip home.

I have one album that always get's played at some time on my trips usually when one of my friends or kids demand it or the mood requires it. It captures the joy of being out there and the wonder of life's journey like no other:

The album is called "The Freddy Jones Band" and it is by The Freddy Jones Band. It was their first album.

Interestingly, there is no one named Freddy Jones in the band! The first cut is a kick ass live version of their song "In a Daydream" which is about waking up on Tuesday morning after a long weekend in the wilderness and daydreaming about the experience with lines like "The sky is calling, Calling out my name" and "The sun is shining, Its here to wake me up" and "No one around, Just me and the sky" This song is my anthem.

So, let's hear what you got! I'm always looking for killer new music to play on my adventures so I hope you participate and we all can benefit!

Cam, that's a tough call. There are SO many good albums that selecting one is definitely tough. I guess that's the point though. All of the ones listed above are undoubtedly on my list. I suppose another for consideration is Blue Traveler's "Four". The track, "The Mountains Win Again" is one I always play once I arrive at the Colorado border after having driven 13 hours from Houston, Texas.

On my last solo trip, I listened to lots of movie music (John Williams and Hans Zimmer) and modern classical.

I really like "Cartographer" by E.S. Posthumus. Most stuff can be hit and miss, but that whole album is pretty good.

Hey Frank:

I don't know that album but I just listened to "The Mountains Win Again" on Spotify - Great Song! I'll listen to the entire album when I get some quiet time.

Check out "The Freddy Jones Band" album - you will love it!

I'm not quite ready to commit to a single album but all these here are great choices. Right now I spend a lot of time listening to Canadian Brass Louis Armstrong tribute album. Personally, I think everyone should be listening to podcasts though...but I'm biased.

It's THE WHO for me. Windows down and volume up.

Love it! "Who's Next" can't be beat! Back in the mid 70's I installed an 8-track stereo in my Mom's 1969 Torino Country Squire wagon. Several times each summer, my brother, two or three friends and I would pile into the wagon with our backpacks and head north to the Sierras. We wore out the "Who's Next" tape on 395 doing just what you said: Windows down, volume to distortion level, 70 MPH, screaming!

Hi Dan:

I tried to check out the link to your podcast site but got this message:

What's up with that?

Anybody like classic Springsteen (i.e. The Wild, the Innocent & the E-Street Shuffle, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run albums)? Good stuff for long journeys. Also, if you like Jazz you can't go wrong with Thelonius Monk.
