Motocycle on the back

100acre

Adventurist
I'm thinking I may buy a motorcycle to replace my bicycle for my long adventures. I want something in case the main vehicle has a breakdown, to explore, or in case of an off road emergency where a faster retreat may be necessary, among other reasons. I will need something I can easily mount on a trailer hitch and preferably something that swings out so I can access the back of the truck and hopefully a new FWC Hawk. So, I know very little about motorcycles, and I am quite a large person at 6'9" tall and weighing in at 265 lbs. What I'm looking for is anybody's ideas and opinions for purchasing a new and or used motorbike for such an endeavor.

Also any ideas on a hitch mount would be mighty welcome too.

Thanks, Dan.

Dan, are you looking for a dirt bike onky, or in theory would it be better to have a dual sport bike so you can ride it on the street?

I'm sure more people will chime in later, as we had the toys 4 tots event this weekend, so it may be a bit before people get home.

This has got your name all over it Dan...

Im thinking about something for the trails and street legal. Thanks for the heads up. I forget you guys have more to do out west.

Take a look at a Yamaha TW200 street legal and will do 55 to 60 mph, 70 to 80 mpg, very easy to ride and will go anywhere.

with your size, a lot of bikes will feel cramped. I'm a KTM fan- raced them for a few years and been lusting after their big bikes for a while. Easy to maintain, and they don't change the necessary parts every 2 years like some manufacturers. Check out their 530 EXC or an older 525. Even a 450EXC already street legal would be fun for you, and very capable. Avoid anything with the 560, its a little racey and likes to boil.

A lot of people will tell you KLR 650. They're great, and make a great second bike or garage bike, but are a bit heavy for a hitch mount.

As for a hitch mount, I had the basic tray setup and loved it. Hauled a 450 Race bike all over Colorado and Utah on the back of silly little Honda Element. As with anything weight bearing- less moving parts the better. A tray rack should be out of the way of the truck tailgate when empty, but a definite threat to the shins. Check the math and see what people with the same rig are running on other forums also. I'd rather learn from other people's mistakes than make them myself!

I ordered a motoped to add to the bike rack with the mountain bikes just to have what your kinda asking about. I did order the survival and hope to have it soon.

I'm looking at the Honda Grom. I originally wanted a Ruckus or Zuma. The Grom looks like the best option for me now. I currently have a '05 KTM 525 Exc that I'm looking to get rid of

Lots of helpful options. I definitely like the Motoped. $2500 is a bit much for a motorized bicycle. Production doesn't start until February. Looks awesome though.

I'd love to be able to actually see, sit and ride one before ordering one. Being 6'9" tall and 258 lbs. I'd hate to get delivery and it not fit my large frame.

My first thought was to avoid some of the super tall dual sport bikes, as they can be a bit tippy and high centered for some people. As tall as you are, they are probably about right for you.

I think I'd avoid the cute type almost-a-motorcycle types with your size.

I googled pics of tall guy on a grom. Theres a pic of one guy thats 6'5", he said he cant ride it, his knees hit the handlebars.
