Having a troubling time to finding that one near-perfect phone holder in-vehicle, I think I've finally found it. (And no, it's not a RAM mount ). My current phone, Kyocera Brigadier, has a funky side button layout that doesn't allow it to mount to most other holders. A cradle arm may inadvertently depress a button or block the charging port or other access point.
After seeing Raul from Xpedition Outfitters post of a spiffy looking phone mount that cradles the lower corners and mid-top, it peaked my interest so I contacted him to give this mount a whirl. Full 5052 aluminum, powder-coated construction, with a friction ball joint that's not wobbly, and a removable mag mount that can be transferred to another vehicle very easily. I ordered the 'Large' size so it can fit my girlfriends iPhone6+ as well, but they have another 'Small' size as well for smaller devices.
The whole assembly is pretty self-explaining. The upper center cradle is free-moving, vertically adjustable and can be tightened by a thumb screw on the back side, just above the ball joint. This allows a nice secure clamp for your phone. The lower cradles are fixed, but at 45deg angles to allow for multiple phone sizes.

The ball joint itself is a friction free-moving joint. It takes a bit of muscle to move the cradle into the position of your choosing, but once it's in place, it's not going anywhere. It can be rotated 360 deg and at any desired angle and hold its position no problem. Just behind the ball joint is the main base and mag mount. The mag mount is a neodymium magnet with 90lb pull, and boy does that magnet take some muscle to pull. My dash started to pull apart instead of the mag mount! Shoddy Nissan construction! The supplied two metal discs for the mag mounts have 3M double stick tape on one side and allow for an almost anywhere type of attachment. I am a bit skeptical with double stick tape but the discs have a center thru hole where you can screw into for extra security. With proper surface prep and cleaning, the tape will definitely hold its weight though.
If you're looking for a RAM mount alternative, definitely check out the Mob Armor Switch Phone Mount. They've also got some pretty rad looking, rugged tablet cases with similar construction as well!
