Micro Brewed Root Beers

100acre

Adventurist
As a connoisseur of fine root beers I thought I'd ask what places around the country might brew their own root beer . If you know of any, would you please list them so I might take extra paths to secure the fine flavors offered by them. I will bring back many after my journey. I will be visiting these states but , feel free to list others for fellow travelers procurement and enjoyment. Thanks

Oh yeah... Root Beer, I had to check the title twice, to make sure it said ROOT. That Boot Beer thread almost got me.

Personally for me, it's Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve Root Beer. Nothing beats it. Unless you're going to be buying regularly from the store near me, then it SUCKS, and you'll HATE it, don't bother.

But you asked about local brews. Here in California, there are probably quite a few, but... One in particular stands out, because they brew the Root Beer served at the American Hotel at the Cerro Gordo Ghost Town (look it up! Fun place), Cerro Gordo Root Beer.

My favorite is the root beer from the Steelhead Brewing Co, on Campus drive near UC Irvine. A friend introduced us a few years back, and now we detour there for a meal or a growler fill for every trip to or from LA.

It's a very spicy brew, but they serve it over ice, so it suffers a bit if you don't drink it fast.

When you say spicy, what sort of spicy do you mean? Like hot sauce spicy?

I'm not a fan of root beers that reek of or have a heavy licorice taste to them, I definitely prefer the sweeter varieties.

Spicy like a combination of anise and maybe cinnamon or some of the other "cookie" spices. Not the most liquorice tasting one I've had, for sure.

I too am a fan of the Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve Root Beer. There is a deli in Covina Ca that we used to be able to buy it by the keg, but they stopped doing that a few years back.

I will have to swing by steelhead next time I am driving through

Red Hare Brewery out of Mariettta, GA has some of the best root beer I have tasted. That being said my root beer selection has been limited mainly to A&W and IBC.

Anybody that brings me some fine root beers to the expo in oct or the randyview I will gladly pay you for in valuable FRN's:) or ammo.
