Joe's Uwharrie Adventure

Many of you here have met my son Joe over the years. He has always been a good kid. He has always had a knack to all things mechanical... to the point where now, at 13 he does all my small engine maintenance and repairs. Hard thing is to keep him from modifying it ;-). About 3 years ago Ann and I got him and older full suspension go kart, a Foxfire 620. It is not made anymore. It is too heavily suspended an underpowered with a 6hp mitsubishi motor. Good gear, just not enough for this cart. About 1 year ago Joe took off on a quest to modify it. Here is a list of his mods, all done by him, all his ideas and work.
  • Mount 36 MM Mikuni carb (we had an old Honda ATC sitting in our junkpile) He removed it, cleaned it, found an adapter on line and mounted it.
  • He used parts from the ATC and some leftover parts from my jeep days to get it all hooked up with a custom air filter assembly.
  • He mounted the rear tires on the cart, cause you know more clearance and bigger is better ;-)
  • When he first launched the modded art it shredded the torque converter belt every 10 minutes. He found on line a "Torqueanator" upgrade, saved his money, worked his tail off to earn more and bought it.
  • At this point, the belt shredding ceased.
  • Top speed rose from 18 MPH to 30 MPH!
  • That excessive speed led to the stock front axles breaking. Thankfully we have a cousin is a machinist and custom made him some heavy duty proper front axles. Super beefy, quality metal.
  • He also mounted some new to him rims with some taller tires on the front.
  • He built himself a custom exhaust, using a cheap spark arrestor, and some exhaust tubing I had laying around. Nice throaty growl.
Below are some pics from this past weekend. His first, though not his last, trip to the trails. He killed it. A bit of a celebrity to all the guys in jeeps, toyotas and side by sides.

This is leading to my wife wanting me to turn the Tundra into a trail truck (haha... victory!) so we can ride in air conditioned comfort rather than in my little 96 Tacoma, which can go anywhere but comfort and AC is nowhere to be seen.:D

That is so awesome! It's been a real pleasure over the last few years watching the shenanigans your boy has been up to. I'm sure he's well on the road to being a fine young adult!

I appreciate that. He seems to be turning out alright... although at 13 he is already smarter than me... just ask him... haha. He does understand hard work and the value of being able to do things yourself with your owns hands. Hope you are doing well. Love you bible verse. A lot of us on here brother.
