Just saw this.

Bummed to hear that the military work horse C-130 is being retired. I'll bet those planes will exist in use somewhere long after all of us here are gone. Really kills me that the replacement is being built in Brazil.

(brings up a joke, Obama got a report that two Brazillian soldiers were killed in the mid east, he asked an aide how many zero's were in a brazilian)

You wearing your beer goggles when reading this article? ;)

The USAF is not replacing the Hercules with this aircraft.. the Brazilian Air Force is replacing their C-130s with this smaller aircraft that is made locally, meaning more jobs for their country.

The C-130 is going to be around for a long time...

^^^^Apparently I was...and a mighty fine set of beer goggles they are, I might add!

But the joke was funny, right?

The joke was funny! I flew from Pope AFB to Bosnia in a 1960s C-130 in the late 90s. That was a LONG flight!

Nothing is more fun than staring out the window of a C-130 and see an engine stop...instant panic ensued (in my case)...shortly after my heart rate pegged the meter, the pilot/copilot...whoever was in charge of being a wise guy that day...let us know that they deliberately cut two engines and feathered the props for max cruising range.

Rota, Spain to Sigonella, Sicily in my case.

You know how far a plane can go on one engine Bob? All the way to the scene of the crash.

Credit to Ron White for the joke.

and he follows it with, "we are hauling a*&, I bet we beat the ambulance by a 1/2 hour"

^^^^I'd be willing to bet it's got reverse thrust deflectors (or whatever the technical lingo is for them).
