Review: LuminAID Solar Powered Inflatable Lantern

Everyone needs a light in camp at night for cooking or even just for ambiance while hanging out and shooting the breeze. Technology has, in my humble opinion, made the old school Coleman lantern nearly obsolete. There are just too many better options available that come without all the logistical hassles of fuel, mantles, bulbs or batteries. The newly released LuminAID solar powered inflatable lantern provides an option that requires zero logistics making it ideal for camping, backpacking or even disaster and humanitarian uses worldwide.

About the size of a cell phone when folded up, we got about 14 hours of nice LED lighting on a 7 hour charge of the Lithium Polymer Ion battery.

The inflatable design coupled with the LED light inside makes for a nice ambient lighting that is bright enough to read by. Several of these posted around the campsite makes a nice atmosphere. And you can leave them on all night without cost or worry if you want to.

Weather resistant, it has multiple attachment points and will float making it's use only limited by your imagination. It really is one of the cooler innovations that we saw at the 2014 Overland Expo.

Backpackers will really appreciate it's simplicity and light weight at only 3 ounces. I've not seen a better solution for use on long treks where every ounce counts.

Here's mine in action in the Valley of the Gods, Utah!

The bottom line? The LuminAID light is another innovative solution that will make your camp more comfortable at night and your trip more enjoyable. Perfect for the weight conscious backpacker, it's super lightweight and convenient and at about $20 retail you can afford to have one in your EDC kit for emergency lighting as well as a couple in your camping setup. I had seen these online before and thought it was an interesting concept, but I had no idea they were that inexpensive. I will definitely be trying one out.

I'd like to add we got those from Mark Smith at:

Smith Products Group LLC
mark@smithproductsgroup.com
(757) 362-1892

Mark's primary customer base are high-speed, low-drag government agencies, but he's also a Cruiser-head and fellow outdoorsman whose products also have wide-spread application and are particularly suitable for our overlanding use as well. I suggest you give him a try and tell him that AAV referred you to him.

Thanks Tim. I had his card and could not find it when I was writing this. Mark is indeed a stand up guy, highly recommended

I bought 4 at OEX after seeing them at the AAV compound. They definitely make the camp come alive at night. I used it in my tent annex at night too.
