So it looks like I am likely taking a job transfer/promotion to fort mohave az. Other than the fact that it gets incredibly hot there, does anybody know anything about the area, where to live? What to explore?

You're located close enough for all kinds of off highway adventures....

Death Valley, Baja, SoCal deserts, Sierra's, Grand Canyon, etc.

Oh, and it's going to be hot...when it's not hot, it will be hotter!

Well, yeah, it is hot -- but it's a dry heat so you got that going for you which is good.

...except during Monsoon season...when it's hotter, and wetter, and when desert drivers lose their minds on the roads...fortunately, you'll have no commuter traffic. The occasional lizard may blow a stop sign, become road kill, and be lizard jerky for a crow in seconds as it bakes on the asphalt.

If you happen to like the desert, solitude, and possibly not being able to see your nearest neighbor, you'll adapt to the heat and learn to love the place. It really is a decent jumping off point for countless southwestern adventures, not to mention Colorado, Utah, the Rockies, etc.

Yeah I'll be looking to this forum for more details on southwest exploring, spent most of my life and adventures in Idaho, Montana, and wyoming, so this will be new to me. We have some desert here in wyoming.....but I'm thinking it's not quite the same thing.....

And I'm not a big fan of neighbors, and I'm a huge fan of solitude, so that works....

Awwww geez, just as I was getting myself used to the idea of Arizona, the big boss calls and tells me he is going to send me to Louisiana as well to see where I fit better.

Louisiana? Just who the hell did you piss off?

I'd rather poke my eye out with a sharp stick...

Then again it's hot there too; but it's a wet hot.

I love Louisiana - awesome culture and tons to do especially if you like waterborne adventures!

I have a thing bout water that stems from a Boy Scout trip gone awry. Still like the idea, just don't like the practice of being in the water.

At this point I have a phone conversation/interview on Monday with Louisiana, and leave for an on site visit in az on wednesday

Maybe we pry you away from the Hollywood MAGTF and get you assigned to MARFORRES, cher? I bet you change your tune then... :D

I was sitting here thinking that I am a little far along in life to drop everything and enlist In The Marines....then I realized you were talking to Dave.

It's the bugs that would drive me crazy anywhere in the south east. I was born in Georgia, went to school at UT Knoxville, and lived in Florida for a year and a half, so I know of what I speak! SoCal has really spoiled me with it's lack of bugs, somehow, my dogs/cats don't even get fleas around here.

Yeah, my wife is from SE Texas so we have some idea of the bugs, but I have a feeling it will be worse in LA, then again AZ has it's share of creepy critter

You would be just across the river from the start of the Mojave Rd. Also go to Goffs, CA to get an education on the area history and activities.

So, after all of that....I am moving.....

To.....

Elko, Nevada.

Well good, at least you have some resolution and a neat place to explore or at least launch from to other destinations. Time frame for the move and good luck. Keep us advised about what you learn about Elko - I was through there about 30 plus years ago and I'm sure it's changed.

And Mosquitos, gnats, biting flies, water moccasins, ungodly humidity and squealing like a pig on those "waterborne adventures". Arizona desert is still better than that!
