Event Report: 2013 SoCal Mountain Rendezvous

The Rendezvous events started nearly 4 years ago now, a humble idea tossed around a few campfires that has now taken on a life of it's own...

IMG_3555.jpg

Initially, the idea was just a grass roots type get together, a meet and greet in the boonies without presumption, perfidy or puerility unlike some of the poseur-fests and bubba-thons that we all knew about. An event where reality, family and food could be shared with like minded working stiffs like ourselves over the space of a long weekend.

So the ideas for a Rendezvous weekend coalesced into a sort of recipe for an everyman's event, a recipe that includes a good location, free to uber-low cost, community service (trail cleanups, charity fundraising etc) along with ginormous, family friendly food and camp cooking activities and trail runs with a laid back "ala carte" schedule. One thing that had struck me over the years was how little fun the insiders in "the industry" have at events so I also wanted to be able to include vendors by encouraging them to attend as regular Joe's vice "being on" like they have to at shows, these guys and gals have a vast depth of knowledge so including them in a meaningful way (but keeping it non-commercial) was a no brainer to me. And we had to have big campfires... and shenanigans... well, you get the picture. It needed to be FUN for everyone.

The 3rd Annual Mountain Rendezvous was the sixth Rendezvous to date, and everyone I've talked to seems to agree that our recipe is working, many folks enthusiastically stating that this was the best event yet.

Here's my take on the event, big thanks to Brent Haywood Photography for helping me capture the moment.

Additionally, BIG thanks to our friends and fellow Adventurists at Overland Expo, Snow Peak, Triple Aught Design, Allpro, Adventure Trailers, Equipt, Tembo Tusk, ITS Tactical, Energy Suspension, Agile Offroad, Camp Chef, Ursa Minor Vehicles and XP Camper for sponsoring the raffle and shirts that everyone enjoys so much. Together, we were able to raise $1,800 for the BSA this year, topping last years haul and much appreciated by the Council.

Some good blogs again this year about Mountain Rendezvous - we must be doing something right!

Getting there and setting up

They say getting there is half the battle. Truer words were never spoken.

I started planning as I always do about 3 months prior to the event. Mundane, but critical, behind the scenes logistical preparations like location, permits and a host of other things that I won't bore you with here. Suffice it to say that these events do not happen in a vacuum and would be impossible without our team here at AAV (Mike and Lisa, Mitch and Apryl, Stuart, the Trumps, Barlow and Matt) as well as the supporters listed above.

Once all the behind the scenes stuff was up to snuff it was finally go time. Being lead dog has it's perks so I headed up the mountain Thursday to beat the ever-circling early birds...

Headed up Highway 38 on Thursday I had it all to myself, you could really see the fall colors on full display lining the road up the mountain. Damn it was nice to be on the road!

photo (48).jpg

Once I arrived I made a quick stop up on the main road to leave a clue for inbound Adventurists. If they missed the turn they'd end up fishing at Jenks Lake, a win win. Mike had more ambition with his departure time so he was waiting nearby for me (early birds... lol) while Mitch joined up later.

photo (45).jpg

Once in camp I had to pick a spot. No land rush here... yet. This lower area would start to fill up quickly on Friday.

photo (46).jpg

Once we were settled in we walked the camp making sure things were in order, and making a mental note of how it would look when we left on Sunday.

Once the sun set it was time to eat and break open some choice beverages.

photo (44).jpg

A nice fire with the AAV principles and some noodling on my guitar made for a nice relaxing way to end the day for me.

Friday

Up early on Friday the grapevine was already buzzing... some folks had camped here and there on Thursday and were circling waiting for the gate to open. We set to work getting things set up for arrivals. Big kudos to Mike and Lisa who made this the best event to date on the admin end - having them at the gate with handouts and to answer questions sure made it better for everyone.

photo (42).jpg

Snow Peak sent us this nice Recta Tarp set which ended up being a nice hub for folks as well as the judges area during the potluck competition.

photo (43).jpg

After working an hour or two we learned we had a couple rigs parked in overflow up on top across from the gate. They'd rolled in late Thursday... we ended up letting folks in a bit early just to avoid a line up at the road. And it was on...

Hard to tell in this panorama, but there were already about 40 rigs here tucked back in the timber when I took this one. Early birds...

photo (47).jpg

Friday was super laid back with folks arriving into the night, campfires sprang up and people did their thing as darkness fell over the mountain. The local band of Coyotes made their nightly appearance once everyone was in bed, creeping down close to camp and erupting in a chorus that ended as abruptly as it began. I was reminded why this is one of my favorite places to camp as I drifted off to sleep.

Saturday

Saturday was our busy day, lots to wrangle with runs coming and going, potluck, dutch ovens and the raffle all happening this day so we were up and at 'em early again.

IMG_3647.jpg

I tried to capture more photos this Rendezvous, good thing I had help from the Master of Visual Imagery, Brent Haywood.

IMG_3611.jpg

The rigs came rolling in all day again...

My daughters came up for part of the day. My youngest, Savannah, would rather be with dad camping in "her tent" as she calls the FlipPac than just about anywhere else. I love her! :)

photo (40).jpg

As evidenced by the responses we solicited from the kids, this event has something for everyone!

Apryl got set up with an impressive display of glamping towels, I use 2 of these for my kitchen setup. Much better than paper towels and they never blow away or fall in the dirt!

People started setting up camp.

IMG_3604.jpg

There were dogs. Lots of good dogs :)

IMG_3605.jpg

IMG_3606.jpg

There were trail runs:

Some even stopped for lunch in remote spots - glamping at it's finest.

IMG_3698.jpg

And there were trail rides... complete with carnage - and trail side repairs and American ingenuity

After the trail runs, people started relaxing in camp. Socializing, kicking tires and just chilling out is the main objective here and these folks are all experts. Lots of bovine scatology going on this weekend. The t-shirts are always a big hit at the Rendezvous and folks were eager to get one and some MRV decals.

IMG_3770.jpg

IMG_3765.jpg

After the swag was doled out it was time to get serious about food.

IMG_3777.jpg

IMG_3822.jpg

IMG_3849.jpg

The potluck was a HUGE hit as usual with more food than we could eat. A mind blowing variety of dishes were shared by all.

DSC_0087.jpg

The dutch oven stuff was jaw dropping. Major kudos to everyone who dove into this effort - the most dutch ovens I've ever seen in one place cooking at once!

DSC_0101.jpg

When the dishes were done, it was time for the Judges to exercise their head of the line privileges.

DSC_0115.jpg

People put a LOT into these dishes and each was a unique treat - very hard to choose the winners!

IMG_3844.jpg

IMG_3835.jpg

The Judges retired to the privacy of the Snow Peak Lounge to gloat over their heaping plates and argue over the winners. And they did argue as each had a list of contestants and dishes that were, without a doubt, all winners.

DSC_0127.jpg

And then the crowd surged... nobody was missing out on this!

DSC_0118.jpg

Deserts galore... and ice cream! The 12V fridge/freezer revolutionized the way people camp today. No more soggy bread in an ice chest, and ice cream anywhere you go! :)

With the sun setting the fall colors were brilliant. Time to get the raffle going while folks were in a feeding frenzy.

DSC_0138.jpg

The raffle was a hit again this year, big thanks to all our supporters who not only share our vision by supporting the event but who actually attend. This was the best event yet for vendor attendance with Ursa Minor Vehicles, Triple Aught Design, Adventure Trailers, Equipt Expedition Outfitters, XPCamper, Allpro, Energy Suspension, Outback Proven, Agile Offroad and Tembo Tusk all on site.

As night fell it was time for relaxation - another hugely successful Rendezvous on the books! With five different big firepits to choose from folks faded back into their campsites for beverages and food comas...

Tim and his brother Eric getting good and warm. Eric regaled us with some pretty good stories of gold mining in the Yukon and Alaska. We have the coolest, down to earth people people come to these events.

The Campsites and Gear of Mountain Rendezvous

Some of these folks have all the answers, camp sites and setups that are dialed in just right. Here's a sampling of what I saw on a walk through camp on Friday:

Hans and Bente have it all in this amazingly equipped Toyota 70 Series Land Cruiser camper

DSC_0016.jpg

This tent was handmade - amazing work!

Matt came back from Afghanistan a week before MRV, here's his minimalist setup.

Gotta love the old school Coleman stove and chuck box!

DSC_0030.jpg

I spotted this homebrewed gem of a trailer back in the timber waiting for it's owner.

Most any camp setup from posh campers to teardrop trailers to simple ground tents could be seen in abundance at MRV

Mission accomplished, Dave. The concept is a great one. That's why we come back. Well done, as always. Carry on.

Cant wait to see the rest of the report. There is always so much going on that I feel like I miss almost as much as I see. Had a great time again this year and can't wait for the Desert in March

We can hardly wait for Desert Rendezvous in March 2014! And Mountain Rendezvous September of 2014 ;)

Oh, and did we mention that there will be an Appalachian Rendezvous back East in the fall of 2014? Yup, stay tuned to AAV for details!

Nice job! I haven't seen this many diverse vehicles in one location since Overland Expo.

Great location. I've never seen that many dutch ovens in use at the same time or even in the same location!
I am looking forward to the East Coast edition.

We're looking forward to it as well - gonna be some added value too - top secret stuff coming to the Appalachian Rendezvous ;)

Congratulations Chris.

It took a while, but we were finally able to present the winner of the FOX shocks, raffled off at the Rendezvous and donated by AgileOffRoad.com, his prize!

The shocks couldn't have gone to a nicer guy, and his son was really stoked too.

Thank you!

And a huge thank you to AgileOffRoad.com for their donation and hospitality. Colin sure did enjoy his time both at the Mountain Rendezvous and when we picked up the Fox shocks. He hasn't stopped telling me all about how they work and how they'll help the truck so we can go camping. haha. Heck, I even got a little help stacking wood that night :). Thanks again!

Chris and Colin
