Donating to the cause of the week

Am I the only one that grows weary of getting hit up to contribute to whatever the "Gonna save the world by doing this, just need you to donate X amount of $$$" cause of the week is?

I want to tell some of these people to save what ever $$$/effort they were going to put into whatever their fundraiser is, go directly to see whichever people you were going to save, put your time, $$$ and effort into helping them... buy them a sack of groceries, do some laundry, mow the yard, whatever. I'll bet they would appreciate that more than you skateboarding across the country with one arm tied behind your back, or whatever the latest fundraising strategy is.

If it's a little kid out hustling up and down the block knocking on doors for Little League/Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, etc, I've got no issue with it, always have a couple of bucks for cookies/candy, etc. Co-workers hitting me up at work and making me feel obligated to buy $20 worth of crap just because so and so did, gets really old.

That's a very good subject that I'm glad you brought up. There are a lot of ads out there and we get mailings for contributions daily. Don't you wish there was something you could relate to? Something you could feel good about donating to and really making a difference.

Well, there is...

As you click through the images on this site of travelers and the places they visit don't you think of the miles they've logged in their fuel-hungry, over-loaded trucks; can't you imagine the tears welling up in their eyes, faces speckled with insects, as the gas pump digitally advances the price? At times, I just want to turn away but can't - I've got to make it the next way-point and to that off-road destination, flies-in-the-eyes and all. How many times have you sheepishly clicked to a different subject, all the while feeling guilty for leaving that adventurist behind.

You can continue to turn away from those needs, or you can continue the dream of this writer and say 'Yes' to sponsoring one precious AAV girl or boy. Now is your chance to make a difference - I promise you can make these haunting images go away. Just PM your CC number with expiration date to TangoBlue on this site (don't forget the CVC code on the back of the card) and you can sponsor a deserving adventurist.

Or, say 'No' and know that the terrorists win. Make a difference - make the American Adventurist choice - do it today.*

*Just kidding.... ;)

I absolutely agree. I used to be a Rotarian ( and I mean no offense to current rotarians) but one of their big goals is to eradicate polio. We would talk about donating money, or raising money for this cause on a regular basis. Meanwhile there were 3 doctors a PA, and 2 nurses (and myself, none of the above but years of experience in healthcare). I couldn't help but think, that we could have done a lot more if we just jumped on a plan with a bunch of vaccine and took care of it.

As far as the kids go, I have a very strict policy. 'I am happy to buy from your kid. Here is my address feel free to have him/her stop by after 6pm.

I violated that rule once. My wife reminded me of it, and made me by twice as much from the first snot nosed kid that knocked on the door. (Anybody need some cookies?)

Bob, I agree. It does get old. I'm very selective about what I'll entertain. And solicitors (unless it's kids on a legitimate mission) get no play from me. Telemarketers? We leave the house phone unplugged much of the time since anyone who wants to call us knows our cell numbers, if I do answer the house phone to a telemarketer I just hang up.

We no longer buy candles, wrapping paper, pizza making kits, magazines, or any other crap when groups do fun raising. Instead we just donate what we were going to spend in cash directly to whatever group, which is usually school related, is fund raising. We do buy the donuts though...mmmm....donuts.

Wow... tough crowd - I worked hard on that one. I guess nobody remembers those Sally Struthers 'Save the Children' commercials... I feel so old.

We should recruit more 'mature' members instead of all these dang kids.

I put the thread in the wrong section, should have put in the Pub where snappy comments are better tolerated...usually!:tread

Along the Sally Struthers line, whoever it is begging for animal shelter $$$ has a touching commercial, I'll change the channel if the remote is handy just so I don't have to see the animals forlorn stares. My dogs and cats are rescues/pound adoptions, so I have actually (kind of) put my actions where my words are.

I'm not that far behind you on the age thing, 52 this year...feel like 62 most of the time! If I'd known I was going to live this long I'd have taken better care of myself!

Yea these things bother me as well. I donate to St. Jude’s via an automatic payroll deduction through work; it’s a post tax deduction because the company doesn’t want to deal with the tax hassles but you do get a certificate to use when you do your taxes showing what you gave. Whenever I get accosted by these folks I quickly respond that I give to St. Jude through payroll deduction and that usually shuts them up right away; I mean common how do you argue with St Jude’s.

The other problem I have with giving to these other groups is how do you actually know that the money actually makes it to that particular charity and doesn’t just wind up in some kids pocket.
