DEF equipped Diesel engines

Surfing the 'net while laying in a hospital bed, I took a look at DirtRoadTrip's site and saw the article on the new Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon and the baby DuraMax Diesel engine that will be introduced next model year.

A little backstory, I work at a GMC dealership and have been eyeballing one of these trucks for my wife. Initially I was going to hold out for the diesel version, some recent customer experiences with full size truck DuraMax engines in Mexico have me rethinking that engine choice.

I've had two customers that have taken their 2011 or newer Dmax's to Baja. Both have come home in limp mode due to emissions issues.
This could be completely coincidental or it could be fuel related. In '07 when US diesels had to start running ultra low sulphur fuel, and the trucks had particulate traps added to the emissions systems, there was a lot of concern in the desert racing community that we were going to have issues in Baja as many of our chase trucks were equipped with Diesel engines. This proved to not be that big of a deal with minimal/no issues with Mexican fuel, at least with my customer base.
I've not done the research to verify this, but I've heard that diesels are not available to the general public in Baja/Mexico, so parts/service are not readily available for them south of the border regardless of brand (GM, Ford, Dodge).

This has changed my thinking to sticking with a gasoline engine if I do pull the trigger on a new truck for Machelle.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone here has has issues with a DEF equipped diesel running Mexican fuel.

I have quite a few friends with newer dodge trucks with Def, and it seems they have issues fairly often with the setup, and fuel mileage suffers as well. Most of my buddies with newer trucks, set up similar to mine are seeing 12-14 mpg highway, whereas my 04 without all the Def bull crap sees 17-20 mpg highway. Once upon a time, I thought about upgrading my 04 to a newer year dodge, but given these issues and bad fuel mileage, I'll keep my truck till it dies. If I were you, I'd stick with the gasser too. Heck, if I ever do decide to upgrade my dodge, in all honesty, I'll probably buy a power wagon with a hemi.

I had considered trading my 06 Dmax in for a new one. I've changed my mind on that one.

I have the 2014 Cummins with DEF. I have never had a problem, and consistently get 18-21 mpg highway.

I would recommend getting a B20 tolerant truck, as they are much less picky about fuel. With a B20 tolerant truck and a good water separator changed often, you are pretty well protected. Your emissions system is going to throw fits if you are spitting out particulates, which should be minimized with a more fuel tolerant platform. I'm not an expert, but that's my logic.

Of course I've never taken my truck to baja, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

^^^^Ever run it on low sulfur fuel rather than ultra low sulfur fuel? That seems to be the issue. Both of my customers that has issues towed boats to Cabo, which is about a 2200 mile round trip.

Negative, but I would imagine that a more tolerant fuel system would help. We only have ultra low sulfur bio blends around here.

Low sulfur would spit out lots of particulates and potentially gunk up an emissions system if used under load. Do you know if they had the same problems when not towing a boat?

I'm with Scott on this one, wouldn't trade my '05 for a new one. I get 21 in town and 24-25 on freeway @70. But I had truck built w 3.53 and factory jake in D3500 Dually oh yeah 85 series tires
