Not specifically an ad but produced by Toyota to illustrate and distinguish the different Land Cruiser product lines...

Is that saying the 80 series started in 1989? Is it just in the US that the first 80s were in 1991?

Yes, the 80-series was introduced in Tokyo in October 1989. Keep in mind production often starts far earlier than the introductory year (which is 1990 for the 80-series). You can determine that DOM (date of manufacture) by looking at the door tag on the DS B-pillar.

In fact the FJ62 was still made up to January 1990 and even sold as a 1990 model, although the vast majority of "90's" were actually made in 1989.

Also note that nowhere in that illustration do you see the FJ Cruiser, even though there are owners that insist that their "lineage" comes directly from the Land Cruiser product line. That certainly is true regarding a few visual cues, but its actual "lineage" is cleverly drawn from a variety of successful product lines that Toyota assembled to compete with other automaker designers who exploited the retro-vehicle craze.

Indeed, the 2nd gen Tacoma/4th gen 4Runner and FJC are more related to the 120 series Prado than anything else. Many hardcore Cruiser guys will tell you the Prado/Lexus GX lineup are mall crawlers but in my humble experience the 120 series IFS etc has proven to be very durable and worthy of the lineage.

I've always liked looking thru old magazines at the car & truck ads too. The MPG's of those old trucks are impressive. Even better than most today's trucks and suvs produced today.

Now i need to find me an old Dodge Ram so I can pick up Hot Blonds.

Or a 4x4 Nissan so I can go wrastle me some gators. :dunno :D

There used to be a common ad for the jeep yj on the back of a lot of out door mAhgazines. The price was $8995. Some still fetch that!

That's amazing that some of those old pickups advertized in the 20's MPG's! Was that "estimated" or did any of them actually get close to that mileage? The furthest truck back that I can remember was my dad's 1979 F-250 which got about 8 MPGs.

I have a bunch of old "Four Wheeler" magazines from the late 80s and mid 90s. Free to anyone for local So Cal pickup or ship on your dime. I paid to have them shipped from an Expo member and enjoyed going through them. Lots of great old ads! They brought back good memories.

Edit - given to new owner.

This chart is so cool! It's too bad we only get light duty (I've got a Lexus GX 470/Prado 120) and station wagon here though. I bet series 80, 100, and 200 Land Cruisers / Lexus LX owners cringe hearing that. The 70 series are considered heavy duty because they have solid front axles still?
