Automatic Snow Chains

Seriously, pretty outside-the-box thinking and could be a true on-the-fly traction aid in rapidly deteriorating weather conditions. :clap

Some of the Facebook post suggest these have been in use for a couple decades in the mountain states and NW.

When I worked on a civilian ambulance we had them. They worked great and used them quite often. The only downside was when had dual rear wheels and the outside tire still required chains. But on a single wheel they do work great. Loved having them. Simple flip of a switch.
The fire engines here have them as well.

Those are pretty much standard equipment in these parts on DoT truck, school busses, and emergency equipment. Pretty nifty. Most systems I've seen are too bulky for anything smaller than a commercial chassis nor would not work off-road. They are nifty though. Fun to watch unless the vehicle in front of you suddenly turns them on and kicks up a bunch of gravel in your face.

Kinda off topic... but I'm going to toss out a plug for TireChain.com American Made tire chains; oh and their factory isn't too far from me here in PA. Great company with amazing customer service. Real quality product. Lots of options from mild tire-wires up to super aggressive heavy duty ice chains.

Be great if you had air bags on the vehicle. Not suppose to use chains, to close to bags when driving. Now how much?

Agreed, this is a great source for quality tire chains :)

The little rubber wheel runs along your tire, turning them at the same speed as the tire.

So that means when the tire is turning slowly, the chain wheel will turn slowly and the chains will hang almost straight down - they will not be under the tire.

Looking at the video again, no doubt there's a sweet spot for speed. And you're right, I think at a certain low speed they'd become ineffective.
