Space X is saying that they plan to have civilians orbiting the moon next year...

...what do you suppose the odds are that they will make this happen. Would you volunteer for the mission if $$$ wasn't an issue?

I don't see them making their 2018 goal...remember that Elon Musk always seems a little optimistic on time lines. And HELL NO I wouldn't volunteer, I have a hard enough time not killing myself right here on mother Earth!

I always imagine what might of been if Nixon didn't pick the stupid shuttle program. But the Airforce was hell bent on their program that they never used. If you want some fun retro history, look up what I'm talking about. The Space Task Group put forward the idea of a moon base and mars mission, but congress didn't want to keep funding NASA at Apollo levels and the Airforce had other ideas.

I'm excited to see what SpaceX manages to pull off. Especially if they can meet this timeline. They'll bet NASA and their planned flight with the STS which should highlight that private is the way forward.

Besides, we all know only one company can help us build better worlds for tomorrow.

They sorta blow things up a lot.

That was my thought, too. Those two might just end up as the butt of a late night talk show host's monologue joke and that's it, famous for dying in a Space X rocket. Who didn't see that coming?

I actually tried to get my wife to volunteer for the couple's mission to Mars. Five years in a box the rough size of a storage shed, one lap around Mars and back home. What's not to like? She said no way. I guess the XPCamper will have to do, of course we can actually get out of that box.

My pops was an Air Force missile man, we were stationed at Vandenberg during the SLC-6 construction back in the '70's. I got to see the 747 come in with the shuttle on it's back during early flight tests. Then it all went south, I don't remember the exact issues, but as I remember a large portion of the concrete that was poured was not to spec. Rather than start over, they abandoned the west coast shuttle launch capability.

I'm looking forward to watching them launch from Vandenberg AFB (if that's where it'll start) while having a cold beer in my back yard.
