A piece of car camping history

I picked up an old Heilite Car-Topper RTT today in Ramona for Heidi's uncle back in Tucson. She was headed back to Tucson next week anyway when he asked us if she could bring it back with her. He's into all things retro/VW and bought it for his sons bug. How it's supposed to fit on one, I have no clue:

We took it off the rack to open it up for some pictures.

For a tent made in the 50's, it's in amazing shape. Tent material is canvas like the old military GP tents of the day. The base (tub) of the tent is made of aluminum and houses a very comfortable mattress (the original) still wrapped in plastic. It also has a vestibule/changing room like a lot of the new RTTs have and a skirt to go around the base. It turned out to be a cool way to spend my afternoon.

The original RTT as far as I can tell.

That design, and patent, is far older than anything ever made in Australia or South Africa.

Made in Lodi, California, USA

Feels like 150 lbs or so. Brochure says 100, but that's not including the mattress... a $37.50 option.

Not too far off from the current RTT's even with all their lightweight tent materials and modern technology!
