With just enough water (~2.1’) on the USGS gauge, we did 2 nights on the Little Juniata. This trip was all about relaxation, as evidenced by the lounge chair strapped to my boat. Daytime temps were in the high 90s. The river was ~65. We spent a lot of time sitting in the river. We camped out of our boats in the Rothrock State Forest in the “gorge” between Spruce Creek and Barre. There are designated sites along the river and so long as you only stay one night, you don’t need any permits. Permits are free however if you want to stay longer. Our camp was just above a set of rapids that made a soothing roar to sleep by. I’ve kayaked the Little J many times. A rail line follows the river for most of its course. We were camped on an oxbow looking section where the river goes around a mountain. Looking at a topo map, the rail line went straight through the mountain. It had to be a tunnel. A hour hike later we found this cool feature from the 1800s. Today, they would just carve the mountain out of the way. As usual, fantastic meals, all cooked on the open fire. No snow peak involved, lol. Just a rusty grate we found in the woods. Homemade sausage, eggs and garlic naan. OMG!
