weight debate: arb (35 lbs) vs much more expensive awning (13 lbs)

My wife got me the ARB 4 foot awning for the back of the FP for Christmas (will arrive Jan. 2) I have both the Kelty Noah 16 and the Kelty Carport. Both are very slow to deploy (I wanted something fast enough so if we stop for a picnic, I would use it.) Someone posted about using door hinges and making the ARB removable. I had not planned on that but Dave has me thinking of UV and long term use.... hum.

slow to deploy will be an issue for me. i think to start off though, the kelty carport or tailgater will be sufficecent as i wont need it set up everytime.

can you specify " slow to deploy"? (roughly how many minutes)

I personally have two 2500 ARB's , one on the truck the other on the trailer, with no issue on either.

That being said with your setup, I like that old school aluminum track you slide a tarp into with poles on the outside. You could tarp the entire side of the trailer from front to back, 8' or so out (once it's opened). Then put 4-5 poles along the outside and call it a day

I have never timed it and usually do it solo (easier than getting my daughter or wife to help, plus many times, I am solo at a bike race)
The wind is a major time issue.
Carport - no more than 10 minutes, putting poles together, stringing them in place and making the "bend" so the carport takes it shape. If I don't have to guy line the heck out of it, then I just attach it to the truck cap and put in the legs.
Noahs Tarp is more - you need something to attach it to, throwing lines over tree branches, etc. I am going to try the expanding painter poles and bungee cord one end to teh truck cap, set the poles and then guy lines.
That set up up should be a sub 5 minute route, but not sure it will be good in the wind....

PS the ARB 1200 awning is HEAVY - I am going with a removable set-up... still mulling what. If I had a roof rack, no problem, but bolting it to the back of the Flippac has me concerned.

i am just going to go with a kelty carport or kelty tailgater. light weight and cheap. i wont be using them often so they should last me long enough.
