Can anyone guess why I am doing this?

Dammit Dave….. yes… but you need to be more specific…

:)

Hint, no u-joints involved

Clip failed, axle shaft leaving the housing until the new patent pending “Timber-Clip” was applied.

1996 Discovery 1, Full Floating Axle...
one piece HD half shaft/Flange broke, exploded really.. Taking out the Stub Axle with it, I found tons of metal shards wedged in-between the shaft and the stub axle. Stub Axle end with the nuts which secure the wheel housing fell out when it came apart.

Solution:
Remove other half shaft, rear driveshaft, Clean up what's left of the stub axle and the bearing, reinstall the outer bearing (not good put turned at least) and Flange, Add some Jeep wheel retainer log, and Limp it out a couple of miles to get it flat bedded.
Wheel was held in with the brake caliper and the Log :)..

Rear Axle is toast since the Brake caliper mount was also bent, no way to reliably straighten that since its Cast.

a bit of excitement when the jack they were using collapsed bc they did not have it on a base, some quick high lift and kinda take over, and carry on out.

Excellent field expedient repair and recovery example!
