Introducing Sir Clax-a-Lot

Many will remember watching the Budget Overlander concept materialize into a capable-yet-practical adventuremobile, equally suited to moderate-plus trail use and economical family commuter duties. A small lift and larger tires were fitted, along with armor for the vulnerable bits and everything else needed for safe self-supported back country adventures. The end result was a surprisingly capable machine that “wheels” like a skateboard, and can hang with more traditional 4x4s. I laughed at that last bit too, but hey, it does have more ground clearance than both the new Cherokee Trailhawk and the beloved XJ of old.

Not included above were the typically “major” repairs that happen on a high-mileage vehicle. I’ve replaced axles, the radiator, the hood, and a fender over the last year—I’m still shocked at how inexpensive replacement parts are and how easy the vehicle is to work on, even for an aspiring shade-tree DIYer with limited experience and a minimal toolkit.

Since wrapping up the project it’s passed torture tests running the Mojave Road in twelve parsecs and crawling up the rocky ledges of Colorado’s Alpine Loop, but all said and done I feel like we’ve only caught a glimpse of the potential this platform has. So, onward and upward…

Phase Two: Stretching the Limits

As an adventuremobile the Foz embodies the core values Adventurist Life is built upon. In the field it’s unassuming and unobtrusive, fading into the background so you can enjoy the adventure or enhancing the experience with it’s agile nature. We’re going to keep that budget-minded discover-it-yourself spirit alive as we shift the focus beyond the bare necessities, and find out just how much fun can be had with the little Subaru.

Sir Clax-a-Lot. So dubbed because we have yet to go on a trip with the quirky Foz and not come back with a new noise or a check engine light—always something cheap and easy to fix. That little orange light has become a symbol of comfort and hope, without that glowing good luck charm I fear we’d never make it back home.
