The Random Thoughts Thread

We're in CrownKing now. 8-10" on the ground. Had planned to take Senator's Hwy tomorrow, but locals are saying 1000 feet up its 20-24". Gonna have to reroute. My son is driving his CanAm UTV. Locals driving similar are chained up on all 4 wheels. I'm pulling a 16' flat trailer with the FJ, so as soon as the road thaws, I'm heading for lower ground.

60 Shot, 12 Fatally, in Christmas 2016 Weekend Shootings Across Chicago
Chicago NBC news reports...

It's important to note that our Servicemembers overseas are much safer than being posted in Chicago. At least in a war zone I (we) was assigned a personal weapon... in Chicago their current governance, you would be considered a felon.

Are "condolences" considered an "apology"?

From what I can tell, "condolences" are an expression of sympathy/sorrow, they don't qualify as an "apology".

So one of my Christmas presents is causing some discussion between the wife and I. My old man had the hide from the Pennsylvania cow elk he shot last year tanned for me as a surprise. I was pretty excited to receive it Christmas Day, the wife was dubious. I currently have it draped over the loft railing with some other hides. Michelle said something about "Could we possibly decorate with things that don't come from deceased animals? Possibly candlesticks or dried flowers?" That's crazy talk right? Here's a shot up at the loft from this comfy couch I'm sitting on...

Whatcha think?

Really? That sounds like sas-talk to me. Would Michelle rather clean up after a live Elk cow in the living room?

If that's all I have to go on, I know that I'd be jealous of your house.

Thanks. We built this home with our own hands with some help from friends and family. My dad felled the tamarack poles, I sawed them into cants and when dried ran them through our Pendu profiling system and fashion the milled logs, and we built our house Michelle and I. The only bought lumber is the rafter system and studding; other than that it's all products from our sawmilling days. It's like we live our family legacy everyday within the confines of home and the fruits of our craft.

Your place looks like a hunting lodge from the Swiss Alps. Me thinks it looks awesome! Just need a couple suits of armor and a set for a horse and maybe a
Doedicurus clavicaudatus which was a prehistoric glyptodont, living during the Pleistocene until the end of the last glacial period, some 11,000 years ago, except they had their own armor. Think armadillo the size of a Volkswagen. Or Ankylosaur of the future in the past. I'm not sure if they were carriers of Yersinia Pestis back then like our modern armadillo.

That's freaking AWESOME! Just when I thought I couldn't hold you in higher regard. WOW!

Hmm, do you suppose they cook the books to make it look like less of a problem than it really is, such as is often claimed happens in the US and England?

(Insert molar suck sound here) I have yet to see a discussion on crime and safety whilst traveling through Mexico on any "overlanding" forum that hasn't become a clash of world views.
