The Random Thoughts Thread

Wanted to share this, 0 relevance on this weekend (well guess now have some money to pay my way in) This guy came from Tenn (at least 7 hours away) to pick up the skeleton on my Range Rover. We used my lift to lower on his homemade flatbed, made from old RV. No wall behind the seat, wife due to have baby in two weeks, and there dogs. All I'm going to say is I like his style! I told him Im giving my hero of the week award.

america for the win...

FIFTY people shot in Chicago for the second weekend in a row! I'm glad I prefer Baja over Chicago, MUCH safer in Baja!

Haven't checked the actual rules, but reading the comments, Chicago already has some of the toughest hand gun laws in the land...obviously they need even MORE gun control laws. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that pretty much summed it up...If guns kill people, then pencils must misspell words and cars drive drunk!

You can probably add San Francisco to that list of tough gun laws - news report I saw said last gun shop in SF proper is closing shop because of the latest legislation passed in SF will make it to difficult to operate in the city. That is all I'll post as I don't want to start a political debate in this thread. If I can remember, law required the shop to video all transactions, have them available for review weekly, maintain them for something outrageous like 5 years, etc.

Question I'd have on all those murders...if solved...is were the weapons used obtained legally??? Hmmm...If I were a betting man, I'd say NO.

As hard as it is to believe there's a District Att'y in long Island NY that forbids any of his prosecutors to have a gun not only while working but even in their private homes? How stupid is that? Just when you think it has reached critical mass in stupidity they surprise us.

Not sure what the local law says there in Long Island IRT firearms (NYC, like Chicago, has a handgun ban IIRC) but what kind of a spineless moron lets the DA tell them what they can do in their own home? In America?

GTFO

Sounds like the local Commisar is out of control.

UPATE Just saw a headline that that decision was being resinded? My My how some get religion when called out !!

Random thoughts right? Ok to end our current drought here in Ca. how about we convince the powers that be to hold the next OVX in California?

Would this be a modern day rain dance?
Maybe just your thoughts of bringing OVX here helped with the rain we had Monday and more in the forecast for next week? We'll really need it this winter up in the NorCal mountains.

If my thoughts could do that wow Ok I'm thinking of a new scope, new president and an end to worlds strife and hunger.

Some random thoughts from my recent travels and event experiences.

I really like OzTents

You can't have too much foul weather gear because when you need it, you need it.

Good boots are key.

I prefer to travel light. Less crap means more time to focus on where I am and who I'm with.

Air travel is fun. A light jacket (ExOfficio or Triple Aught Design), an extra battery pack for my phone and some walking around money were really all I needed for "Overlanding" at 30,000 feet.

Southern hospitality is not a myth.

Pennsylvania venison tastes different than Washington venison. Tasty but somehow different.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to off road prowess. Big and heavy gets stuck big and heavy.

A short wheelbase is generally better in wooded terrain, especially the wet and muddy variety.

Brand loyalty is hilarious. There are so many good rigs to choose from today.

The biggest liability with any 4WD vehicle is the operator.

You can't bolt on skill or experience because 4Wheel Parts doesn't sell it.

I like pie. And love clam chowdah.

I've made some outstanding lifelong friends doing this stuff.

So much truth here.

Having attended more events this way than via my own rig, I can also attest to its merits.

In other news, it looks like my work travel schedule will be even more packed next year, and my wife just landed a work from anywhere gig... So we might be able to do some living on the road next year!

You would have really liked Oz Tents a weekend later at the Overland Expo East... Very heavy downpours with wind and I was nice and dry as well as the comments made by so many others who had the same tent. Not the claim others could make with their lighter weight dome tents.

I'm re-thinking waterproof muck boots... I always keep a pair in the bed of the truck and needed them this last weekend, but they are rubber, heavy, bulky and not well suited for walking any distances. I did note there were a number of frer who were sporting gaiters with their HSLD footwear, which is waterproof and infinitely more comfortable. I've used the simple nylon cordura gaiters in snow for akhio sledding and snowshoeing but not in muddy, wet conditions. I'm thinking I'm going to give that an evaluation as a lightweight, waterproof alternative.
