The Random Thoughts Thread

Is it gone yet? :D

It usually didnt last long when I saw snow in the Verde.

I camped with a couple guys out one of the canyons near Sedona once, we slept under a tarp. The weather forcast said 2" of snow possible. We woke up to the tarp sagging down on us and 12". Drug the diffs of my F-250 most of the way out.

Well we got over 7", the most I've seen since moving here 12 years ago. And it's 15 degrees outside this morning.....burrrrr

Happy new year!

I got a low humidity alert from a system at work at 2am. I thought it was no big deal but went in anyway. A 6" Water main at the street broke and ran full blast for several hours. I was the first to call it in. It is only 3F here today, so the campus is basically a big skating rink. It is on a hill. The back hoe can hardly move around, very entertaining to watch.

When I was in college, we put chains and a water ski rope on my room mates explorer and pulled people around on a air mattress. Lots of fun! Only a couple broken ribs! :)

^^Like...

I would tow the braver ones on a trash can lid with a snatch strap. I don't think that would go over so well these days.

I have earned new respect for my truck. Running a little late this evening, I decided to stomp it on the highway since traffic was virtually clear. 101 and it was still pulling harder and had plenty left in spin up.

This pickup has way more power than I know what to do with. Good problem to have.

great we have a prez whose motto is WUS WUS , I doubt there was and distinction and honor involved

On the ISIS theme, how about those Kurds?

ISIS was like the Blitz,....until they ran up against the Kurds, and at Kobani it all started coming apart. I was surprised to learn how many Kurdish women fight. Some great vids on youtube and liveleak. "Kurdish female fighters", "Peshmerga", and "ISIS bodies" (I find that one oddly entertaining and somewhat humorous) are all good search terms. "Kobani" turns up a lot also.

Mad Max Fury Road is the best Mad Max film to date. Epic and entertaining in every way. I loved it.

That is all.

It was a good movie but I felt it did not follow on with the whole Mad Max linage. Take out the couple brief moments of his original car and this could have been a complete stand alone movie with no reference to Mad Max.

Still some very cool rigs in this. :D

Looks like it is starting already. BMW and PG&E are launching a pilot program that pays BMW i3 owners to charge their cars off peak hours to reduce the strain on the electrical grid. It damn near takes an act of God to build new power plants in CA, whether they are solar, wind, gas or nuke, someone is going to protest. I've got no idea where we are going to get the power to charge electric/hybrids as they become more popular.

You want fifteen hundred bucks? Well, BMW is teaming with a utility company in California to hand you that coin if you let them manage how you car gets those precious electrons from the power grid. Oh, and there might be Chuck E Cheese’s involved.
BMW and their partner Pacific Gas & Electric Company in San Francisco are conducting an 18 month trial where they pay 100 BMW i3 owners 1500 smackers worth of gift cards if they just stop charging their cars from the grid at certain times. The idea is to provide relief to the grid during periods of high energy demand. BMW doesn’t say what kind of gift cards they’re handing out, but it’s almost definitely Chuck E Cheese’s, the Preferred Premier Dining Experience Of BMW Drivers Everywhere That I Just Made Up.
BMW says there are over 56,000 electric vehicles in Pacific Gas & Electric’s service territory in California. That’s more EVs than are found in any other electric service territory on earth. That’s a lot of vehicles that can really strain the power grid, especially during times of peak demand (around 5:30 PM on an extremely hot day, for example).
Here’s BMW’s blurb:
BMW i will have the ability to manage the at-home charging of participating BMW i3 vehicles, delaying the charging of some vehicles by up to one hour based on signals provided by PG&E while always prioritizing the expressed mobility preferences communicated by the BMW i3 owners.

Thank heaven for the last bit, as at least they won’t stop you from driving your car at all.
The program, called i ChargeForward, starts this month and goes on through December of 2016.

...and it only take whining by Barbara Boxer to put 3000 folks at San Onofre Nuclear Generating station out of work and business with no viable plan to replace the power that plant generated! It's costing double to decommission it vs completely gutting it and putting in all new systems and equipment! Off peak doesn't exist, just like water here any longer.

Will there come a day when Americans start moving to different States based on the availability of water and electricity?

Does this sound a little 3rd world to anyone?

Good question and yes it does. Historically, in modern US history, populations follow economic opportunity. Your state is a perfect example of that... abandoned steel mills, mines, and factories abound in PA; even abandoned towns. Where there has been a turnaround in urban areas of Pittsburg, the revival has been centered on tourism, retail, and healthcare, all volatile industries.

California is already seeing a migration and I suspect it will be enhanced when business finds it can no longer afford the high state and federal taxes, energy, human resource, health-care, and restrictive industrial/manufacturing policies.

Another question to compliment yours - Will there come a day when Americans start moving to different countries based on the availability of water and electricity?
