I wonder how well a nylock cap nuts would work in that situation. Would they stand up to the wear or will the dome tear off and do more damage.

M6 capped lock nuts.

I think capped lock nuts would be "friendlier", however since traction boards are a low-speed tool the bolts are as much of a deterrent to aggressive wheel spin as they are an aid to traction. I have found that they bite better right from the start thus negating high wheel speed. So far I haven't noticed any tire damage in the few times I've used them.
