New version of Gaia GPS

Thanks for the heads up. I hope the pro subscription from the older version carries over to the new version.

It does, they have a new pricing model, but if you paid for the old app, you can use the new app as a trial for 2 years. And the old subscription carries over. I just bought the early Pro this month. Looks like I'm still good.

Already downloaded and logged in. Very slick. The new GUI will take some getting used to. The new version seems to love it's white-space thus making it harder to scan the list of folders and the new buttons are a little quirky. I'm sure it will take a little time to get used to it. Will be interesting to see how it looks on the iPad which has a much bigger screen. The new NatGeo maps look good though. I used them years passed on my old Windows OS laptop.

I can't decide. I kind of liked the old top/bottom with transparency. But the new slide out and use of gestures is nice. Along with track previews. Also, the switch to vector graphics over bitmap on the maps means better maps. Smaller download sizes and better resolution when zooming.

Old for comparison

Nice, I have been using Gaia for a long while now and it is very good. But had to use Avenza and buy the Nat Geo Trails Illustrated maps separately to view in it. Worked well, but you have to manually change maps or flip to the other side of the map. The new Gaia, with the Pro option, gives you all the Nat Geo maps and they are current. Thats a huge plus. Each Nat Geo map is $11, so can add up fast and make Gaia Pro look better in comparison.

Hmmm... looking at Pro now... $39.99 a year or $5.99 a month... :coffee

I just looked at my confirmation from apple, the Pro was $29.99, not sure if I got a promotion or not there. I quickly loaded the Nat Geo layer, and it is pretty awesome. The only thing I wish the system would show the map number. Otherwise, its seamless between all the maps.

As far as I understand, everyone who paid for the original app, gets a free 2yr trail and discounted upgrade to Pro if you didn't already have it.

I got to use it extensively the other day doing some rock hunting with my uncle. New app seems snapper and the vector maps are a heck of a lot smoother in offline use.

@izzy ,, so the Nat Geo maps layer now included is all of the "Trails Illustrated" National Parks maps?,, (with the pro version?

If I was going to look for a used iPad to run this new Giai, what model are you running? I know some didn't have a GPS chip, but not sure which ones.

You need a cellular able iPad. You don't need to pay for cell service but those are the ones with the GPS. Wifi only iPads don't have it but you can always add a wifi attachment but not the best way to go.

I purchased a iPad Mini 3 (Wi-Fi + Cellular) 128gb model from the Apple store's refurbished section. Discounted price and still apple care qualified if you buy refurbished too. You're actually not saving much buying a wifi only model since most of the bluetooth GPS receivers are $150+ which tends to be the price difference anyhow between the models. The current generation is iPad Mini 4. I wouldn't purchase too old of a unit either.

You do not need cellular service (or signal for that matter) to use the GPS portion. It's highly accurate. I've been using the tar out of it since May now.

What I'm really liking about this app overall is route planning on the website, being able to trace routes, add way points, and then just have it on your device before you leave home. This really beats a lot of the devices out there. And I couldn't see using another device.

I have an iPad Pro 9.7" (same size as the base iPad, so smaller than the 12" iPad Pro) with a rugged case and bluetooth keyboard. It's pretty much replaced my old MacBook Pro. Has the celular chip so it has built-in GPS. If I went with a wifi only one I would spring for the Duel150 GPS bluetooh antenna.

@BoldAdventure ,, How is the 'route tracing' feature?,, Reason I ask is, I purchased the HEMA product @ Expo '15 when they debuted,, and it is painful,, having to zoom in and slowly click a 'bread crumb' trail along your planned route. On a really curvy trail, you have to click points really zoomed in. It will not 'automatically' trace between 2 points (around a curve in a trail for instance),

Is the Gaia any different?,

Thanks for any feedback,

Wade
