My Mega Cab

Adventurist
Hello, my name is Pat, I have been on Dodge Trucks Xtreme for years, NWOverland for a while, and EP briefly. Found this site not long ago and decided to join in the fun.

I work at Boeing, and my truck is pretty much my full time hobby.

It's a 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab, the only thing that is stock on it now is the transmission and transfercase, time to fix that.
It has a full Thuren long travel suspension system under it, ARB/Grizzly combo, 37" Maxxis Trepadors on PW wheels. It's a constant work in progress, as you all well know. As soon as I get home I will start posting pictures ect of how it got to where it is now.

Welcome to AAV and nice rig. Always nice to see more Rams in the mix. :)

Thanks guys, that picture was pre fender modification courtesy of the Whipsaw and stupid driver. I'll start putting some build pics up later today.... I have them on 3 different computers which makes it kind of a pain LOL.

Im a Ford guy, but your truck looks pretty nice. Are those Rigid dually with amber filters in the front? How do you like them for light output?

They are Combat LED's, which appear to be Rigid knockoffs. So far I like them, though the amber covers are kind of a pain to keep clean.

My truck started out going one direction, then some things changed and now going a completely different way with it. A little history, a few years ago I bought my first diesel. A dang near new 1997 F250 Crew Cab…. I loved that truck. It had gone from 100% stock to 100% OMFG in the 10 years I had it. Along the way found a bunch of other like minded Ford owners, which progressed to diesel truck guys, which progressed to getting on a diesel drag truck team, which led me to the National Hot Rod Diesel Assoc, where I eventually became race director. Ultimately that truck was cursed with electrical problems and would just shut down where ever it wanted to, every sensor replaced ect ect and I traded it in on a 2006 Dodge Ram. I was REALLY sad to see it go. Then life got in the way and started though a divorce, too many hours at work and couldn’t keep doing the racing thing, but the truck was originally going to be BUILT for drag racing and truck pulling. Fast forward a couple years…. A buddy I met through some other diesel junkies started working for Carli Suspension. Then was posting pictures on his blog ect ect, he moved to Baja and spent almost every day in the dirt traveling all over the peninsula logging thousands of miles. That just sparked something inside me and right then and there I knew what I was going to do with my truck.

So some information on the truck….
2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab 3500
Cummins engine, “mostly” stock (injectors and headstuds)
48RE Automatic transmission, stock for now except for Mag Hytec deep pan, it will be built this year or early next.
Stock transfer case and drive lines

Front axle…
Fully trussed AAM 9.25 with 4.10’s, ARB locker, dynatrack ball joints and ’08 steering upgrade, and Thuren TRE replacement, Thuren lower steering stabilizer, and Carli upper stabilizer, Red Head steering box, Carli diff cover with lower stabilizer mount (so stabilizers oppose each other), high angle mount for upper stabilizer

Rear axle...
Grizzly locker and 4.10's...

Front suspension…
Thuren Alien long arms, Thuren shock towers, Thuren torsion bar and links, Carli limit straps, Thuren tuned Stage 6+ 2.5″ King remote resi shocks.
Rear suspension….
Thuren Long travel leafs, Thuren long travel shackles, Thuren tuned Stage 6+ 2.5″ King bypass shocks with piggybacks. Will be adding Carli rear shocks mounts, the factory ones are known to tear off.
Other stuff…
37×12.5×17 Maxxis Trepadors
Power Wagon OEM wheels (VERY strong and cheap)

AirDog 100 fuel/water filtration system
Uniden pro xl 520

Creative Fabrication winch bumper
Baja Designs 44" Onyx
Warn VR 12,000 with ASR 7/16" 80' line and TJM hook.
CJC Offroad spare tire hold down (37″ will not fit between frame rails)
Protech aluminum tool box (with spare axles, oil, water, and enough tools to disassemble your truck)
EBC brakes, stainless brake lines...
Painless Wiring fuse block
Blue Sea 150a cutoff switch
ARB dual compressor and 1 gal. tank

The truck pretty much rides like a truck on the street, though handling is amazing compared to what it was. Off road the truck just floats, it will cruise nicely in the dirt, but also get up to speed and handle it with no issues. I’ve hit 1-2′ bumps at 75+ mph and you don’t really notice them. And before anyone asks yes it will be getting a roll cage, as well as suspension seats ect. But it is being built go from point A to point B no matter what the terrain is between (to a certain extent).

Great to see another fullsize dodge here, about a million more and we will catch up to the Toyota :bandwagon

:D

How are you liking the Maxxis Tires. I am currently running 35" Toyo, but want to try and have the truck ready for 37's for the next set of tires. Do the Maxxis seem to be wearing even? Any Mileage estimates?

I love these tires, they roll smooth, are quiet (more quiet than the Toyo's) and work VERY well off road. I will replace these with another set, plus being 12.5's I didn't loose any turning radius. Can't say on the mileage with these because they came off of a KOH rig, so they had one race on them. I have had them on for a year now and I would guess I have 50% tread left??? I can measure later, I have a spare with 100% tread on it for comparison.

It all started with a pallet... One of the guys on the DTX forum was moving to Argentina, wasn't going to need his truck for 4-5 years. So he decided he could use the money more and took the truck back to stock and everything you see here was taken off. I called Chuck at Strapt Performance to see what was left, nothing had sold yet. I said how much, for what? All of it.... I made his day... So off the pallet went to me....

I started with cleaning and rebuilding the Carli arms, once I did the first one it took no time at all to do the rest.

Then I got into cleaning up all the other parts....

Next Cole at CJCOffroad hooked me up with a Von Heimer trussed AAM 9.25 with Dynatrack ball joints, little bit of a track bar ding on the coil bucket, very easy repair... Still need to box in the C's. The axle came with 3.73's and an open diff, it now has 4.10's, an ARB, and a Carli diff cover.

More to come...

Picked up some tires and wheels from a buddy, Power Wagon wheels and General Grabber Race Tires off the Kore race truck. These tires were awesome in the dirt, but louder than cut boggers on the street.

That is a seriously trussed front axle... will come in handy if you want to grade some roads. :D

Looks like you CAN fit a queen size bed in the back seat! 

Queen size does not fit in the back seat of a mega cab, they slide around, you have to step up to a cal king to get a tight fit :)

If you add a hot tub in the bed you will have true trail limo. And some blacklights...and a bar in the console... I am sure that axel will support it all.

Time for the Thuren Alien Arm install... First weld on the new frame brackets...
longarm2.jpg

Then cut the old frame brackets off... You have to be really committed to do this, or should be committed lol...

Once the brackets are off, install the new Alien Arms. Side note: According to Don Thuren this process is way easier on the ground, without the axle hanging in the air.

All done, on the ground, time for a test drive.
