The North Maine Woods are is a great place to explore. It may be a little pricey $15 a day and $15 a night to camp but it's worth it. There aren't many areas in the Northeast that you can easily travel over 100 miles on dirt roads. I have made two trips from my home in the Southern Adirondack Park. it's a two day trip to get there but what a beautiful area it is. http://www.northmainewoods.org

Former Mainer, current registered Maine guide. The NMW are great but many “overlanders” being irresponsible have lead to increased scrutiny up there. Right now any group over 4 need a special permit and a licensed guide on board. Hit the Golden Road north of Old Town, and enjoy down east. Pretty area and a nice long dirt road to Canuckistein.
