How would you chop up a brand new 100' winch rope?

How would you shorten a 100' winch rope into a primary winch line and an extension?

So, you have a brand new 100' winch. 100' is obviously too long, so how would you chop it up?

Just me, but 70/30 wins. 70 on the drum. 30 for an extension (will be shorter once you splice the eyes into it).

is this for what is on the drum or is all of the 100' for extensions? If it is all extensions I would fo 50/30/20 if it is on the drum I would leave it full length. Where you wheel the most would also have to be accounted for, our trees are pretty far apart in the desert :tumbleweed

Drum + Extension

For SoCal, I would leave it full length (my line is 92') by the time you leave a few wraps on the drum and run it through a snatch block I can knock the length down pretty quick, and out here am more likely to want an extension than to have too much line.

Another option for you, rather than cutting and splicing, is to slap that 100” line on there.

Then, learn the ways of the Safe-Xtract X-Lock.

Game changer, because you can keep your winch pulling on the first and second layers the whole time. Just keep adjusting the X-Lock.

Mine was 90'... I cut it to 70' and made an extension which entered up at 15'ish.. and I carry that and another extension @ 30'..
add those to a 25' tow strap and I have a 125'+/- reach, there is also the dynamic rope if I need to mix it in for shock loading.

I would think less than 60' on the drum would get impractical.

Keeping the numbers simple and not counting turns on the drum, etc. If you have 60' on the drum and a 40' extension you'll still have a 70' reach at 2x winch capacity with a snatch block.

Luckily on the east coast we have an abundance of trees everywhere. LoL

Kinda what I was thinking. 70' with the rest turned into an extension. Combined with the rest of my gear I'll be in the 150-200 reach range if I can salvage some of my current winch rope into another extension.

Agreed. I'm leaning toward 70/30 right now.

Exactly. Unless you’re competing at KOH, that would be ridiculous.

I like at least 80-100” on the drum. With an X-Lock and a decent extension, and a Deadman, I’m pretty good.
