I thought I would share an interesting discovery:

Terry Barney (AKA the Iowa Woodsman), a former US Air Force survival instructor (S.E.R.E) has a free online Bush Class. The format is real simple.
For each level, there is list of skills to learn. For each skill there is a Youtube video demonstrating the task. Then you post your work on the forum as proof and also for feedback. There is no time limit and you do it at your own pace whenever you feel like it or have time.

More info here: http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/132-BushClass-USA

Here are the requirements for the "Basic" level:

1.Feather Sticks and Shavings

2. 5 Man-made Tinders

3. The Twig Fire

4. Four Basic Bushcraft Knots

5. Improvise a Cooking Implement from Metal

6. Knife Sharpening

7. 2 Strand Twist with Man-Made Materials

8. Braiding Man-Made Materials

9.Set a Tarp Shelter

10. Make a Simple Snare

11. Tree Id and Uses

12. Cook Bannock with Fire

Just an update: I've been steadily moving through the lessons on quiet weekends and really learning a lot. I do the lessons with my kids. I like the way all of the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

Great find. Thank you for sharing. -J

Thanks for sharing the link. Terry is a good friend of mine, and so are both owners of BCUSA. I have attended Terry's classes in 3 different states. He is a great guy, and super humble. The free online bushclass, has helped a ton of people get started.

I see several familiar usernames on this forum. Small world.

This is from an Ohio class in 2011.

Thanks for sharing this link. There's a TON of helpful information there. As a matter of fact, aside from spending the last 30 minutes here I'm going to probably spend another half-hour checking out this section of their board. Now, if only I can get by with doing all this before the wife gets on my case. ;)
