Hey Ralph It's sort of an antenna. It's actually a laser reflector so that the aliens can gauge how far they are from Earth and know when they are supposed to start slowing down. You wouldn't want them to overshoot now, would you?
Kris wasn't on that trip - his wife wouldn't let him go because she can't go that long without it. I went with my brother Gary. It was a sort of the 27th anniversary of a trip we took a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
