On June 9, 1909, Alice Huyler Ramsey, a 22 year old housewife from Hackensack, New Jersey, began a 3,800 mile journey from Manhattan, New York to San Francisco ...in a green Maxwell automobile. She would reach her destination on August 7, 1909, earning Ramsey the distinction of being the first woman to drive across the United States from coast to coast. This would prove quite the road trip. Of the 3,800 miles, only 152 miles were on paved roads. Over the course of the drive, Ramsey changed 11 tires, cleaned spark plugs, repaired a broken brake pedal, even slept in the car when it was stuck in the mud. For navigating this journey, she relied mostly on maps from AAA and by following telephone poles, reasoning that the poles with more wires would lead to a town.
