Congratulations on the littleone!! Not long ago we went through a similar debate. I drove one of the titan xd with the Cummins and did not like it one bit! I had a 2007 tundra in the past so I knew it was a good truck, but the mpg sucked. We settled on a power wagon and have been very happy with it. I would highly recommend a 2500 over a heavy 1/2. As others have said you just get so much more truck for the money.
The difference between gas and diesel in mpg and long term cost is somthing you need to spend some time on and figure out what is best for you. For me gas won out, but mostly due to the initial cost of a diesel.
If you buddy has access to GM I would go check out a Silverado 2500. You can get them with a rear locking differential. I seriously considered one as they drive very nicely.
