Anyone out there know the condition of the trails near Harrisonburg? I've been looking around for a good place to take my 98 Ram but I've not had much luck with finding people out this way who are into exploration via vehicle. Thank you all in advance!

Another area we like to explore is Grayson Highlands State Park....

Near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia's two highest mountains, Grayson Highlands offers scenic views of alpine-like peaks more than 5,000 feet high. Facilities include a visitor center, campgrounds, and hiking trails leading to waterfalls and overlooks. Scenic horse trails and a horse camping area with electric and water hookups, stables and parking for trailers are available. The park provides year-round access to the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail.

Grayson Highlands is an excellent park. We stay there and take the kids bike riding on the Virginia creeper trail, super fun.

Right off Blue Ridge Parkway. 37.681180, -79.333760. USFS 164A. Turn north on USFS 164 and then right on Robinson Gap Rd under the bridge. There's Shady Mountain Campground that people still camp at but it looks like the Park Service abandoned it in the 70's as it no longer appears on USGS maps after then.

Heading to VA this weekend. So want to check this out.

You'll get more dirt south of I64.

If you can't get that far south then starting at Sperryville and heading south is a good stretch.

Etlan Rd. is fun on a bike.

Heading out to Harrisonburg at months end to ride some trail for the weekend. Camp at Meadow knob first night then somewhere around Second mountain for night 2. I love it up there!

Reminds me of the last time we wheeled together. Lots of great stuff in VA, especially the George Washington NF. I haven't been back home since that time in 2013 though. :(

We vacation in the Shenandoah Valley every year. Part of the fun is exploring back roads in my truck. We haven't been east of the Blue Ridge/Skyline Drive. Would you say a 2 wheel drive/no locker truck can make all of your route? Absolutely beautiful part of the country. Thanks for sharing.

If the weather's good a Honda Civic could make it. This is fact because I passed one near the Stone Mountain Winery on the day exploring. lol

That is encouraging. No worries then. I might even be able to make it in my 4x4 Explorer too. Hopefully I will try it in October!

I went back later for dinner... the Sushi chef was from Guatemala... cant make this stuff up.... dude was awesome!
