Meet Fonzie!
You may not know the name Alfonse Palaima, but might have heard of a guy name Fonzie at the any of the last six WEST Overland Expos. He’s a motorcycle journalist and photographer, but primarily a wanderer like the rest of us. His wanderlust came from his well-traveled parents, having traveled across the United States a half-dozen times as a family before Alfonse was in high school. To wake up in a new place every day went from a normal occurrence to a personal obsession. Thirty plus years later, he’s acquired a passport, has
taken on six of the seven continents and has ridden a motorcycle in 23 countries including New Zealand as you see in the photo above. Many of his stories can be read in Motorcyclist and RoadRUNNER magazines.
His four wheeling history grew out of the van culture of the 70s and into a life-long desire. Born and raised in the Northeast corner of the country, Alfonse eventually migrated to the west coast, looking to ride his motorcycle every day of the year. During his time as a web programmer, rock crawling was his fancied escape– when he wasn’t busy winning a Clio Award. He’s since climbed out from behind the desk, and joined those on two wheels in the multi-dimensional dance we call motorcycling. So far this year he’s ridden more than 2,000 miles with the Veterans Charity Ride to raise awareness and the spirits of the wounded combat veterans that society tends to forget.
He’s also ridden with Touratech and the RideBDR group to document the first east coast Backcountry Discovery Route due out in 2019.
Before that, he produced both a
2018 wall calendar of his adventure motorcycling photography, as well as a coffee table book entitled "
Journey To The End Of The World” through Octane Press out of Austin, TX. Dubbed the “Expedition 65,” it was
a journey of nearly 11,000 miles and 65 degrees of latitude between Cartagena and Ushuaia completed in 2016—you might have even seen Sterling Noren’s film premiere at Overland Expo 2017 WEST.
Travel and photography aren't his only passions. It's the connections he makes one on one. In between his work trips, he leaves Los Angeles on a BMW K1300GT, racing away from the urban madness in search of darker skies and a campfire. That's part of what draws him year after year to the Overland Expo, to see the unique community of wandering souls coming together on two as well as four wheels.
Look for him this year in the Author and Exhibitor tent, or wandering around the show with a smile on his face.
In between Expos, you can follow his travels on
MotoInsider.com as well as the usual social media outlets under the same name.

More on the OCTKL
The One-Case Tool Kit Lite (OCTKL) has been gathering dust the last few months. Trail dust, that is. It’s seen enough use that I thought a report was warranted, although I’m not sure the kit has assumed its final form. (See
here and
here for the initial articles.)
In many instances, the contents simply migrated from the OCTKL’s 60-pound progenitor. But I wanted to try a few different things, and I explored a couple of new-to-me manufacturers. Here’s what I’ve been doing...

Roof Racks...
I can tell you the exact moment I decided that roof racks on four-wheel-drive vehicles should be, 1) left off if possible, and, 2) loaded as lightly as feasible if not.
I had to ferry a cased, rigid-floor 14-foot Zodiac inflatable and a Yamaha outboard motor to a research station in Mexico from Tucson, using my 1973 FJ40. Neither boat nor motor would fit inside, so I decided to strap them on the roof rack—where, I noted with satisfaction, they looked purposeful and very, very stylish.
