    TEXAS

I'm a member of TO as well! Great group of folks. I'm looking forward to getting to participate in some of their events now that I'll be close to a lot of them.

    TEXAS

Anyone in San Antonio? I was headhunted by a recruiter off my LinkedIn profile and we are moving to SA. Needless to say I'm really pumped to get into the Hill Country and be closer to Big Bend!

Say goodbye to cheapo Chinese VHF/UHF handhelds?

That's awesome, congrats on passing your test. Now the fun really begins!

    Vehicle / Platform choices???

From my experience with thousands and thousands of miles camping adventures with my family, the best platform is the one where you can buy parts for it *anywhere*. Last year I lost the inner wheel bearing on the front driver's side wheel while on a trip. After a tow to a parts store (can't...

    Random ADVENTURE Photos!

Scout, six at the time, crossing the outflow of Odessa Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park for our backpacking overnight there. I like the photo, but I'm also slightly biased.

    Family Adventure Van 2.0

Progress! Charging the batteries and going to change the oil/flush the coolant before I can try starting it again. Now with the International Navistar style Y-pipes. As annoying as it is to do major engine work in a van, it does make getting to the back of the motor much easier!

    Family Adventure Van 2.0

Since it has been a number of months... Quit my "real" job, downsized, had to get the FAV 2.0 towed to the new place and am finally getting to the end game of a ball of yarn I unwound under the hood. The driver's side head goes back on this weekend (weather permitting), then complete vehicle...

Watch this (ISO: a wrist watch)

I quit wearing watches after my injury a few years ago, but before that I swore by G-Shock. I had a metal band solar charging version that did hit the digital time radio signal to update and stay "accurate" (mostly compared to phones and gps time). That thing was tough and always worked, I...

NC to Big Bend in December (need some input)

Unless it rains or has rained or is going to rain on you while out on the dirt roads, then River Road becomes "sporty" in some spots, Old Ore and Mavick aren't too bad. For backcountry sites I like Terlingua Abajo or Pine Canyon (especially #5, see attached photo from that campsite) a lot more...

NC to Big Bend in December (need some input)

To add to this, the Black Gap Wildlife Management area boarders BBNP and is even more primitive and wild than the state park! I'm also near Waco (College Station area) and am happy to help as I can. There are a few of us on this website that have spent very significant amounts of time in and...

    Family camping

I apologize if it was too blunt, I've just seen these tents show up to Cub Scout camping trips and I've had to be the one to attempt to salvage their weekend when everything implodes due to light wind or minor rain.

    Family camping

For a blog that features a Coleman instant tent as their editor's pick, I have serious doubt on their opinions. I've seen that tent in action and it is a steaming pile of crap. Edit: All the tents they listed are pretty terrible, won't last and won't hold up past a couple of weekends or any...

Say goodbye to cheapo Chinese VHF/UHF handhelds?

That would be awesome, 100ft away from your vehicle...

Say goodbye to cheapo Chinese VHF/UHF handhelds?

A good hard mounted mobile rig with an appropriate and correctly mounted antenna will make you never want to go back to using a handheld in a vehicle again.
