#50 Lucky 5 Ranch to Pedro Fages Monument Loop
9.5 miles | +900'
I felt like a feather on the trail with my day pack after backpacking the sierras last week. I hiked a new 9.5 mile route which looped together several trails. Starting at the Lucky 5 Ranch trailhead along Sunrise Highway I trekked north along the PCT, which offered sweeping views of Oriflamme Canyon to the east. In the distance I could see the bumpy trail I've often traversed with my Jeep heading down towards the desert floor below. Much of this land is actually one of the higher elevation areas of Anza-Borrego. Eventually my hiking route comes to a junction with the California Riding & Hiking Trail and San Diego Trans-County Trail. Swinging south along a meadow that soon frames Lake Cuyamaca in the distance, I cross the highway to pick up the La Cima Trail, then the Sunrise Trail back to Luck 5 Ranch. It feels good to be out hiking San Diego's backcountry again.
