M1102 Trailer Questions

Not sure if this is the correct place to be posting as I don't have a build as of yet, but I love the M1102 trailers and am thinking about buying one in the next few months. My goal would be to have matching tires/rims for spare tires, just in case, and of course aesthetic purposes (has to look good!). My question to the masses: Has anyone changed the standard 8 lug hub on one of these trailers to a 6 lug set-up/hub (17" rim, etc.)? Any downside to replacing?

Obviously the beefy axles/hubs are made to take a beating, carry a good amount of weight, etc., but worst case scenarios, if I needed to use an additional spare, I could pull one from the trailer.

Thanks in advance. (Would be pulling behind an FJ Cruiser)

I towed one from Atlanta to Asheville with my F150 V8. It dropped my mileage down to 8-10 MPG. I would recommend getting a M101A2 which were designed to be pulled behind the CUCV series trucks, which are more narrow and can be fitted with Hummvee run-flats. They have the 3/4 ton rating and are 8 lug pattern. It's a bit lighter and easier to pull than the M1101-1102, which if I recall correctly are also wider than the A2. Stay away from the M101A1!!!

I never switched the axels/lug pattern because I drove an '86 CUCV M1008, so both the rims and tire sizes on the truck and trailer were matching...if you do go for the M101A2 try to get one with the fiberglass bows and racks. The wood ones are Carpy

Lastly if you're towing something behind a FJ, why not just look for a M416? They can still be found on CL for around $500 and can be modified more easily to match your FJ pattern. Plus it would be easier to fabricate a secure lid than it would for one of the larger military trailers My five cents...

Thanks for the info. One other question, anyone have any info total costs to register in CA? DMV site is little confusing about what's what. I have one I'm looking at already registered, and seller is stating about $300 to register. Seems a little high based on fees I saw online, but would love to hear anyone else's experience.

I agree. Those are heavy. This is my M101A3

Modified to this now. Great trailer. $750 to start from GovLiquidation and yeah that seems a bit high.

I've seen people buy them for as much as $1000. I've bought and sold a few M101A2's averaging around $600, but that was 3-4 years ago. I'd say you did alright. How much was the GL fee? If you're ever looking for parts or wanna sell it etc. check out www.steelsoldiers.com
